[ Wuhan lab leak theory: Behind the science and origin of Covid ]

Alina Chan isn’t saying the coronavirus definitely leaked from a lab in China. What she is saying is something that more scientists have grown comfortable discussing publicly: There’s no clear evidence either way.

“I know a lot of people want to have a smoking gun,” said Chan, a postdoctoral associate at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard who specializes in genetic engineering and has been vocal about the need to investigate the possibility of a lab leak. “It’s more like breadcrumbs everywhere, and they’re not always leading in one direction. It’s like the whole floor is covered in breadcrumbs.”

Quite a lot has been going on:

The science around the lab leak theory hasn’t changed. But here’s why some scientists have.

And while public discussion of a potential lab leak has shifted significantly in recent months, as more people pay attention to a theory that was originally promulgated by former President Donald Trump and his followers, the scientific evidence has remained unchanged, according to interviews with five virologists who have experience in microbiology, infectious disease ecology and viral evolution.

The researchers offered near-uniform summations that few conclusions can be drawn based on the available scientific evidence, but noted that the context and circumstances of the origin debate have changed, particularly as critics point out that China has not been fully transparent about the earliest days of the pandemic.

SAGE virologist says Covid lab leak theory cannot be ruled out… but insists the virus jumping to humans in the market in Wuhan is ‘much more likely’

One of the UK’s top virologists today said she couldn’t rule out the possibility that the coronavirus had leaked out of a science lab in Wuhan.

Professor Wendy Barclay, a member of the SAGE advisory group and infectious disease expert at Imperial College London, said she thought the accepted idea that the bug spread to humans in an animal market was ‘much more likely’.

Quizzed by MPs on the science committee this morning, Professor Barclay said viruses transmit from creatures to people in live markets ‘very, very frequently’.’

Doctor criticises Jon Stewart for backing Wuhan lab COVID

A doctor has condemned Jon Stewart’s comments regarding a theory claiming that COVID-19 began in an accidental lab leak.

Stewart voiced his comments on’Stephen Colbert‘s Late Show on June 14, and has since come under fire.

Colbert had asked Stewart for his thoughts on the ‘science’ behind virus detection and prevention.

G7 Leaders Discuss Wuhan Lab Leak Theory, Call For Transparent Probe Into COVID

”That’s why internationally we wanted the review to be able to go into’China’to get all the answers so that we have the full picture rather than these possible, potential, plausible options,’ UK’s Foreign Secretary Raab said. “But, on balance, we do not believe that it came from a laboratory. We think it is much more likely to have jumped from animal species,”’he added.’

He further added, “The first phase of the origin-study was not conclusive so there are four hypotheses, but it’s’not conclusive yet. So we believe that all four hypotheses should be open, and we need to proceed with the second phase, to really know the origins,’ Having said that, he urged China’to cooperate with the ongoing investigation into the COVID-19 origin. “As you know we will need cooperation from the Chinese side. We need transparency to understand or know or find the origin of this virus…after the report was released there were difficulties in the data sharing, especially in the raw data,” he said.’

Jon Stewart reveals why he thinks Covid leaked from Wuhan lab in clash with Stephen Colbert

During Monday’s episode of the Late Show, Stewart said ‘we owe a great debt of gratitude to science” – but he noted the coronavirus crisis was “more than likely caused by science.”

“Do you mean perhaps there’s a chance that this was created in a lab? If there’s evidence I’d love to hear it,” said Colbert, who apparently didn’t believe the theory.

Stewart replied: ‘A chance? Oh my god! There’s a novel respiratory coronavirus overtaking Wuhan, China, what do we do? The disease is the same name as the lab! That’s just a little too weird, don’t you think?’
