[ USU Space Dynamics Lab wins major NASA mission ]

LOGAN, Utah ‘ The Space Dynamics Laboratory at Utah State University has been awarded a contract from NASA.

The SDL is tasked with investigating how large weather events on earth, like hurricanes or thunderstorms, create disturbances above the planet’s atmosphere.

‘It takes a lot of effort to compete at that level and be awarded an entire mission like this,’ said Burt Lamborn, the project manager. ‘It is a Logan, Utah centric mission that will revolutionize how scientists understand how earth weather affects that layer of space weather.’

‘It affects how well you map your canoe trip down the river with your GPS or how good your ‘I Love Lucy’ reruns come through,’ Lamborn said.

Starting in August 1968, the secretive National Reconnaissance Office began launching new intelligence satellites into much higher orbits to accomplish their missions. The first was the CANYON series of communications intelligence satellites, followed in 1970 by the first of the RHYOLITE telemetry interception satellites. In spring 1971, the NRO launched a new and enigmatic satellite named JUMPSEAT, which has remained perhaps the most mysterious of these high-orbit satellites. Each of these satellites pushed the state of the art in terms of payloads, antennas, and satellite design. But JUMPSEAT represented a concerted effort by a civil and commercial satellite designer to break into the top-secret world of satellite intelligence by leveraging a new technology and a military contract to demonstrate that it could perform the mission of both detecting signals from the ground, and spotting missile launches with an infrared telescope.

Space Cadets

Each of these students has a different story. Where he came from, what he researches, where he hopes to go after graduating. Like the planets in our solar system drawn to the sun’s gravity, each with its own history and orbit, these students were attracted to UTSA and the joint space physics Ph.D. program with the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI).

The program, which is designed to enhance collaborative efforts within the community, combines traditional classes with hands-on laboratory sessions where students build instruments that may one day fly in outer space.

For years, San Antonio was the only major city in the U.S. without a graduate program in physics’despite the fact the city housed a group of scientists whose instrumentation work was seen aboard a number of NASA spacecraft. In 2004, the University of Texas System Board of Regents approved the graduate program, and by fall 2005, classes had begun.
