Top German psychologist fabricated data, investigation finds

German psychologist Hans-Ulrich Wittchen is accused of fabricating data in a survey of psychiatry clinics.

Yet his reputation is under fire after an investigation into one of his studies found evidence of manipulation’and elaborate efforts to cover up the misdeed. The investigation report, turned over to TU Dresden in February and obtained by Science, also shows Wittchen intimidated whistleblowers and pressured senior TU Dresden staff. The Federal Joint Committee (G-BA), a public health organization, is suing the company it paid to do the study. And the Dresden public prosecutor’s office is now investigating criminal charges related to the study.

Most people cannot tell the difference between screams of joy and fear because they both have similar acoustic features, study finds

Psychologists at Emory University asked subjects to listen to Hollywood movie clips and determine the emotion behind 30 different cinematic shrieks.’

They found humans are actually pretty good at differentiating the causes of different kinds of screams’like anger, pain or surprise’but are lousy at determining if one is a shout of joy or of terror.

That could be because the acoustical elements used to communicate fear are also present in ‘excited happy screams.’

‘In fact, people pay good money to ride roller coasters, where their screams no doubt reflect a blend of those two emotions,’ the researchers said.’

Upper Midwest Covid-19 Surge May Signal Problems Ahead for U.S.

As states lift restrictions and worrisome coronavirus variants spread, scientists and federal health officials have been warning that a new wave of cases could arise in the United States even as the nation’s vaccination campaign gathers speed. The seeds of such a surge may now be sprouting in the Upper Midwest and the Northeast.

Scientists are particularly concerned about the rising prevalence of variants, which they say could draw out the pandemic. On Wednesday, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said a highly infectious variant that was first identified in Britain has now become the most common source of new infections in the United States.

Money Stuff: Imaginary Invoices Are Hard to Collect

The basic way that Greensill Capital worked is that it would help companies finance their payables and receivables. A client would sell products to customers on credit, and Greensill would pay the client’early at a discount and then collect the money later from the customers (‘receivables finance’ or ‘factoring’). Or the client would buy products from suppliers on credit, and Greensill would pay the suppliers early at a discount and then collect the money later from the client (‘supply-chain finance’ or ‘reverse factoring’).

The more advanced way that Greensill Capital worked is that sometimes it would sit down with a client and imagine who’might one day become a customer of that client, and then imagine how much of the client’s product that hypothetical customer might buy from the client, and then Greensill would pay the client early for those entirely hypothetical receivables, and then Greensill would collect the money later from the customer, if the customer actually became a customer and bought things from the client. If not, Greensill and the client would keep rolling the loans over and hope that one day the customer would show up.’

Protein fingerprinting in minutes

Researchers from Charit’ — Universit’tsmedizin Berlin and the Francis Crick Institute have developed a mass spectrometry-based technique capable of measuring samples containing thousands of proteins within just a few minutes. It is faster and cheaper than a conventional blood count. To demonstrate the technique’s potential, the researchers used blood plasma collected from COVID-19 patients. Using the new technology, they identified eleven previously unknown proteins which are markers of disease severity. The work has been published in Nature Biotechnology.

“In order to speed up this technology, we changed the mass spectrometer’s electric fields. The data produced are of such extreme complexity that humans can no longer analyze them,” explains Einstein Professor Prof. Ralser, who is also a Group Leader at the Francis Crick Institute in London. He adds: “We therefore developed computer algorithms that are based on neural networks and which use these data to extract the relevant biological information. This enables us to identify thousands of proteins in parallel and greatly reduces measuring timescales. Fortunately, this method is also more precise.”
