Dragon Resilience To Break Five-Decade

At precisely 8:42:47 p.m. EST tonight (Sunday, 7 February), a new record will be set in the annals of U.S. human spaceflight, when Dragon Resilience’the vehicle which delivered Crew-1 astronauts Mike Hopkins, Victor Glover, Shannon Walker and Soichi Noguchi to the International Space Station (ISS), last November‘passes 84 days, one hour, 15 minutes and 30 seconds in flight.

In doing so, the hardy little SpaceX ship will eclipse Skylab 4’s almost-five-decade-old achievement for the longest single mission by an American crewed orbital spacecraft. Current plans call for Dragon Resilience and her four-member crew to return to Earth in late April or early May, targeting a record-setting duration for a U.S. piloted vehicle of around 165 days in space.

51 Famous Firsts in Space History

In its first manned rocket launch, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket on May 30 is set to bring NASA astronauts to the International Space Station. The spaceflight, taking off from the same launch pad used to bring people to the moon, represents other milestones, as well: It’s the first time a private company is sending people to space; it’s also the first space launch since 2011 to leave from the United States. The launch was scheduled for May 27 but was rescheduled because of rain.

Evolution of the Space Shuttle

The Space Shuttles’s first flight, a two-day mission launched on April 12, 1981, with commander John Young and pilot Robert Crippen, was an announced test flight. So complicated was the shuttle system, it could be argued, that every mission since then has been a test. Over the years, NASA fine-tuned the system with modifications large and small. As the program’s end nears, the knowledge gained over 30 years will be flying on its 134th flight.
