The World’s Best Pickpocket Reviews The Ocean’s 8 Heist‘The Cut

Apollo Robbins has made a career out of upending people’s perceptions. Widely revered by his peers as the best pickpocket in the world, Robbins confines his gifts to the right side of the law, working as a sleight-of-hand artist, entertainer, speaker, security consultant, and all-around expert in the arts of deception. His methods have been studied by psychiatrists, neuroscientists, and the military for what they can teach about how the brain works. Some of his most famous steals include Jennifer Garner’s engagement ring, the cartridge from Penn Jillette’s pen, and everything in the pockets of Jimmy Carter’s Secret Service detail. As Adam Green wrote in a 2013 New Yorker profile, ‘When Robbins hits his stride, it starts to seem as if the only possible explanation is an ability to start and stop time.’

‘Ocean’s 8’ Review: Great Cast, Not-So

Then the plan goes into motion – they need to get a high-profile celebrity to wear the necklace inside the Met Gala, unaware of their scheme to lift it, and a well-known fashion designer to gain access to the jewels and dress her. This is where Hathaway’s Daphne Kluger, a fame-obsessed actress Debbie’s crew can easily manipulate, comes in, along with Carter’s Rose Weil, a broke and depressed designer itching for a comeback. From there, they’ve got to find a way to get inside the Met Gala’s dinner, fiddle with the seating arrangements, mess with the security cameras, and so on.

Ocean’s 8 Box Office: The New Heist Film Tops Expectations

The past couple of weeks have been a bit slow at the box office, partially because of Solo: A Star Wars Story underperforming, but we thankfully saw an uptick in the past three days. Gary Ross’ Ocean’s 8 wound up making more money than expected, and some of the season’s biggest releases so far both passed some notable milestones. Check out the Top 10 below, and join me after for analysis!
While the more pessimistic expectations for Ocean’s 8 suggested it would only make $30 million in its first weekend, the spin-off wound up doing quite well and pulled in $41.5 millionThere is, however, a big discussion to be had about its legs. The film got solid reviews (68 percent on Rotten Tomatoes

‘Ocean’s 8’ Review: Sandra Bullock Anchors A Gem Of A Heist Caper

Ocean’s 8 faces a different situation compared to the gender-flipped Ghostbusters remake from two years’ back. Most importantly, this Gary Ross-directed heist caper cost around $70 million, or about half of Paul Feig’s $144m sci-fi comedy reboot. As such, this movie could earn the same $229m worldwide and qualify as a solid hit. Also, of note, this film is based within the world of an existing franchise, operating as a spin-off or quasi-sequel. To the extent that any movie can ‘erase’ another movie (amazingly, I am still able to watch both Batman and Batman Begins), this one doesn’t negate the events of the Stephen Soderbergh trilogy.
