The Science Suggests a Wuhan Lab Leak

This entry was posted in Science on by .

The possibility that the pandemic began with an escape from the Wuhan Institute of Virology is attracting fresh attention. President Biden has asked the national intelligence community to redouble efforts to investigate.

Much of the public discussion has focused on circumstantial evidence: mysterious illnesses in late 2019; the lab’s work intentionally supercharging viruses to increase lethality (known as ‘gain of function’ research). The Chinese Communist Party has been reluctant to release relevant information. Reports based on U.S. intelligence have suggested the lab collaborated on projects with the Chinese military.

DNA Explainer: What is ‘Wuhan Lab Leak Theory’, Fiction or Fact?

The world is taken over with a new theory of the COVID-19 origin. The ‘Wuhan lab leak’ theory suggests that the novel coronavirus actually originated from a bat cave and then the leak happened via a lab.’

Independent researchers, after digging the internet have come up with this theory, and though China or World Health Organisation (WHO) are yet to comment on it, the whole world is already reading it as a fiction novel.

The DRASTIC group was formed on Twitter in 2020 and has set itself the mission of exploring the origins of SARS-CoV-2.

The group comprises 24 self-styled ‘Twitter detectives’ who are mostly anonymous with the exception of a few scientists participating under their real names.

The Media’s 180 on the Wuhan Lab Leak Theory.

In February [2020], the Washington Post responded to Cotton’s allegations with a now corrected article headlined: ‘Tom Cotton keeps repeating a coronavirus fringe theory that scientists have disputed.’

The suggestion that the COVID-19 pandemic began in China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology and was either deliberately or accidentally released from the lab has been around and circulating since the early stages of the pandemic. Senator Tom Cotton (R-AK) sounded alarms as early as January 2020 when, speaking at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, he said, ‘This coronavirus is a catastrophe on the scale of Chernobyl for China. But actually, it’s probably worse than Chernobyl, which was localized in its effect. The coronavirus could result in a global pandemic.’

Did COVID-19 Leak from a Wuhan Lab?

In March, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called into question the organization’s report on the origins of the COVID-19 coronavirus. The stage-managed investigation didn’t take place until a year after the pandemic started, and reckoned that it’s most likely that the virus jumped to humans from animal species, deeming the lab leak hypothesis extremely unlikely. Tedros observed, “Although the team has concluded that a laboratory leak is the least likely hypothesis, this requires further investigation, potentially with additional missions involving specialist experts, which I am ready to deploy.”
