SpaceX to Land 4 Astronauts for NASA — How to Watch

This entry was posted in Space Administration on by .

Later this evening, a crew of four ‘ three NASA astronauts and one from Japan’s space agency ‘ will push off from the International Space Station in a capsule built by SpaceX. The astronauts will circle the planet a number of times over the hours that follow until they splash down early on Sunday morning along Florida’s Gulf of Mexico coast.

NASA has not conducted a nighttime splash down like this since 1968, when Apollo 8, the first mission to send astronauts around the moon, returned to Earth.

SpaceX launches 4 astronauts to ISS in reused rocket for NASA’s space mission

Cape Canaveral: SpaceX launched four astronauts toward orbit Friday using a recycled rocket and capsule, the third crew flight in less than a year for Elon Musk’s rapidly expanding company.

The astronauts from the US, Japan and France should reach the International Space Station early Saturday morning, following a 23-hour ride in the same Dragon capsule used by SpaceX’s debut crew last May. They’ll spend six months at the orbiting lab.

It was the first time SpaceX reused a capsule and rocket to launch astronauts for NASA, after years of proving the capability on station supply runs. The rocket was used last November on the company’s second astronaut flight.

SpaceX launches 4 astronauts with recycled rocket and capsule, en route to space station

The mission paves the way for Victor Glover, a Pomona native who became the first Black astronaut to serve a full mission on the space station, and NASA crewmates Michael Hopkins and Shannon Walker, as well as Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Soichi Noguchi, to return to Earth next week. Their Crew Dragon capsule will head back to Earth early Wednesday, April 28, concluding the six-month mission.

Watch live: Nasa-SpaceX set to launch next 4

Nasa and commercial rocket company SpaceX were due to launch a new four-astronaut team to the International Space Station early on Friday in what would be the first crew propelled into orbit by a rocket booster recycled from a previous spaceflight.

The company’s Crew Dragon capsule, the Endeavour, was set for liftoff atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at 5:49 a.m. Eastern time (0949 GMT) from Nasa’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

SpaceX launches 4 astronauts on NASA mission with recycled rocket booster

The crew is due to arrive at the space station, which orbits some 250 miles above Earth, early on Saturday following a flight of about 23 hours.

Within 10 minutes of launch, the rocket’s second stage had delivered the crew capsule to Earth orbit, traveling at nearly 17,000 miles per hour, according to launch commentators.

The rocket’s first stage, meanwhile, descended back to Earth and touched down safely on a landing platform floating in the Atlantic on a drone ship affectionately named Of Course I Still Love You.

The mission marks the second “operational” space station team to be launched by NASA aboard a Dragon Crew capsule since the United States resumed flying astronauts into space from U.S. soil last year, following a nine-year hiatus at the end of the U.S. space shuttle program in 2011.
