SpaceX is tapping into a deep vein of NASA experience as the company prepares to launch agency astronauts to orbit in the next few months.

SpaceX has hired former NASA human-spaceflight chief Bill Gerstenmaier, CNBC reported yesterday (Feb. 11). Gerst, as he is known within the spaceflight community, will work as a consultant for SpaceX’s reliability team, company representatives confirmed to Space.com.

SpaceX brings on NASA’s former top spaceflight official as it prepares to launch first astronauts

SpaceX is only a couple of months away from its first attempt at launching astronauts and the company has brought in one of the foremost experts in human spaceflight to help it do so successfully.

William Gerstenmaier, the former leader of NASA’s human spaceflight program, has now begun working at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California, people familiar with his hiring told CNBC. In his new role Gerstenmaier is reporting to SpaceX vice president of mission assurance Hans Koenigsmann, those people said, as the company prepares to begin launching astronauts.

Previously Gerstenmaier served as the NASA Associate Administrator for Human Exploration and Operations for nearly 14 years. Ousted NASA space chief consults for SpaceX as company preps for astronaut flights

Bill Gerstenmaier, former director of spaceflight at NASA Headquarters and a widely respected aerospace engineer and manager, has taken a consulting position at SpaceX, the California rocket company NASA helped save in 2008 with the award of a $1.6 billion contract to build and launch space station cargo ships.

NASA says SpaceX is targeting May 7 to launch astronauts, nearly ready

SpaceX has almost nothing but paperwork ahead of its first astronaut launch, NASA says. The target launch date: May 7.

The company’s spaceship, called Crew Dragon, was developed as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, which asked private companies to design and build new astronaut-ready spacecraft.
