[ SpaceX Crew Dragon to Bring 2 NASA Astronauts Home ]

If a hurricane does not get in the way, two astronauts who took the first commercial trip to orbit will return home on Sunday.

Two astronauts, Robert L. Behnken and Douglas G. Hurley, traveled to the International Space Station in May aboard a Crew Dragon capsule built and run by SpaceX, the private rocket company started by Elon Musk.

The Crew Dragon is scheduled to undock from the space station at about 7:34 p.m. Eastern time on Saturday and splash down in the Gulf of Mexico off Pensacola, Fla., at 2:41 p.m. on Sunday, Jim Bridenstine, the NASA administrator, announced on Twitter.

NASA astronauts’ scheduled return to Earth via SpaceX capsule uncertain due to weather

Two months after NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley made history by launching into space from U.S. soil for the first time in nearly a decade, the duo is slated to return to Earth this weekend ‘ if bad weather doesn’t thwart their spectacular homecoming.

Behnken and Hurley, whose flight was the first to take place in a commercially-built spacecraft, are scheduled to depart the International Space Station on Saturday evening and splash down off the Florida coast Sunday. But all eyes are on the weather, as Hurricane Isaias bears down on the Florida Peninsula, threatening the designated landing sites with stormy weather.

The 1st NASA astronauts to come home on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon are ready for anything. Even seasickness.

NASA veterans Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken launched to the International Space Station tucked inside a SpaceX Crew Dragon on May 30 on a test mission dubbed Demo-2. The last leg of their journey will begin when they climb into the same capsule on Saturday (Aug. 1) for the one-day trip back to Earth to land in the waters off Florida.

SpaceX’s first crewed mission is headed back to Earth. Here’s every step that must go perfectly for 2 NASA astronauts to come home safely.

Two NASA astronauts aboard the space station are about to embark on a fiery fall through the atmosphere and into the ocean.

Behnken and Hurley must board the Crew Dragon again and hurtle back through the atmosphere ‘ a voyage that will require the spacecraft to weather temperatures up to 3,500 degrees Fahrenheit.

That’s only if Hurricane Isaias, which is headed for Florida, doesn’t whip up winds and waters where the capsule might land. NASA and SpaceX will watch the weather closely to make sure it’s safe for the capsule to splash down in at least two preselected sites.
