It’s Official: NASA Is Opening The International Space Station to Tourists

And that’s not including what the companies will charge individuals for transportation to and from the Space Station.

“US industry innovation and ingenuity can accelerate a thriving commercial economy in low-Earth orbit,” NASA writes in a statement.

Research and testing will continue aboard the ISS to help NASA with its plans to land American astronauts on the surface of the Moon by 2024.

Humans have been conducting important work on the ISS for 18 years now, and that’s not going to stop any time soon.

Quite a lot has been going on:

International Space Station Open To Commercial Space Travel From 2020

The International Space Station will be open to commercial space travel for tourists and private astronauts from 2020. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said this is part of its effort to help “grow a robust space economy,” The ISS, which took the Russian space agency and 13 other countries to help build it, orbits about 240 miles above the Earth ‘s surface, traveling around the globe every 90 minutes.

The announcement has come at a time when the U.S. government ‘s plans to fully privatize the International Space Station by the year 2025, with NASA saying it will save money by leveraging private industry capacity, innovation and competitiveness.

NASA to allow private citizens to fly to the International Space Station

“For all of the money we are spending, NASA should NOT be talking about going to the Moon – We did that 50 years ago,” Trump said on Twitter. “They should be focused on the much bigger things we are doing, including Mars (of which the Moon is a part), Defense and Science!”

It is unclear if Trump was unhappy with the current NASA plan or was expressing exasperation at the pace of human exploration of deep space. Trump’s confusing language about the moon being part of Mars plausibly referred to NASA’s framing of the moon plan as part of a longer-term goal of exploring Mars.

Now, NASA has pivoted again to the moon – and Trump had hyped the plan on several occasions. NASA initially aimed for a landing in 2028, but earlier this year Pence, citing Trump’s wishes, ordered the agency to get there by 2024. That would potentially be before the end of a second Trump term.

Here’s How Much It Will Cost You to Take a NASA

It may not be the moon, but adventurous travelers will soon get an official NASA-sanctioned opportunity to visit space.

Late last week, the space agency announced plans to open the International Space Station up to increased commercial activity starting in 2020. Part of a new strategy to help eventually make the habitable satellite economically sustainable, the move will allow private astronauts the first NASA-approved chance to visit the only place where people currently live off planet, according to the New York Times. But a trip to the literally out-of-this-world vacation spot will come with an appropriately astronomical price tag.

NASA says the International Space Station is open for business

Speaking at the Nasdaq Stock Exchange in New York, NASA officials on Friday unveiled a plan to allow private companies to make use of the space station starting next year.

The plan would allow up to two private astronaut missions per year to visit the space station for up to 30 days and offer companies the opportunity to conduct experiments and pursue other activities there. NASA would also devote one docking port to private operations, which might include attaching an additional module to the station.
