Why NASA plans to slam the DART spacecraft into an asteroid

DART, NASA’s first planetary defense mission, will demonstrate asteroid deflection by crashing the APL-built spacecraft into an asteroid at roughly 14,500 miles per hour.

An enormous asteroid’big enough to leave a six-mile-wide crater and darken the world with dust if it hit Earth’will harmlessly zip by our planet on April 29. The object, called 1998 OR2, is at least a mile wide, and while it poses no threat, it will pass within four million miles of our planet’close enough to be classified by NASA as ‘potentially hazardous,’ because it will continue to make close passes to Earth in the future as both objects orbit the sun.

Mile-long asteroid to make close approach to Earth on April 29, NASA says

A mile-long asteroid is set to pass by Earth on April 29, but no need to worry, says NASA. The asteroid ‘will not even come close‘ to hitting the planet, the space agency said.

‘Asteroid 1998 OR2 poses no threat to our planet, but we can still learn a lot by studying it,’ the space agency said in a Facebook post.

Near-earth objects are defined as objects that could ‘pass by our planet within 30 million miles, while NASA pays closer watch to objects that could pass within 5 million miles of Earth, like this asteroid, to study them and predict their trajectory into the future, the organization said in a video.

NASA to stream close encounter with giant asteroid zooming by Earth

An asteroid estimated to be 1.2 miles wide will fly by Earth early Wednesday morning, but it’s not expected to collide with our planet.

The asteroid is called’52768 (1998 OR2), and it was first spotted in 1998. On April 29, it will pass within 3,908,791 miles of Earth, moving at 19,461 miles per hour. That’s still 16 times farther than the distance between Earth and the moon.

The flyby is expected to occur at 5:56 a.m. ET, according to NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies. The center tracks Near-Earth Objects, or NEOs, that could collide with Earth. They have been tracking this particular asteroid for 20 years, according to NASA.

Massive Asteroid to Zip Past Earth Tomorrow, NASA Says ‘It Poses No Threat’

A huge ‘potentially hazardous’ asteroid is expected to fly past Earth tomorrow. The asteroid 1998 OR2 is said to be more than a mile-long, and if it were to strike the planet, it could cause extreme havoc. However, NASA has put all rumours regarding this huge asteroid to rest, and says that it ‘poses no threat to our planet’. The space agency confirms that the asteroid won’t come anywhere near a collision, and will pass by silently on April 29. The asteroid’s approach can be viewed online or even through smaller telescopes, and NASA says that there’s a lot that can be learnt by studying it.

Asteroid Set to Fly Past Earth Looks Like It ‘Remembered to Wear a Mask,’ Scientist Says

Scientist Anne Virkki joked that the asteroid’s appearance seemed to come at a timely moment amid the coronavirus pandemic

An asteroid is expected to fly by Earth next week ‘ and its appearance will certainly be one for the ages!

‘The small-scale topographic features such as hills and ridges on one end of asteroid 1998 OR2 are fascinating scientifically,’ Arecibo Observatory’s head of Planetary Radar, Anne Virkki, said in a statement. ‘But since we are all thinking about COVID-19 these features make it look like 1998 OR2 remembered to wear a mask.’
