The project ran from its conception in the summer of 2010, through to its final test flight in December of 2014.

From the moon to UC: new movie showcases Armstrong

The first man to walk on the moon was so humble about the achievement that he never spoke of it to his aerospace engineering students at the University of Cincinnati.

After returning to Earth, Neil Armstrong left NASA to become a professor in UC’s College of Engineering and Applied Science. He had offers from universities around the country to serve as their president but chose UC because of its vaunted aerospace program and his simple desire to teach students about his first love, flying.

Armstrong’s former students say nobody loved flying more than he did. As a 15-year-old in Wapakoneta, Ohio, Armstrong would ride his bicycle to the local airfield to take flying lessons even before he got his driver’s license. The Flight (and Fights) of Apollo 7

Apollo 1’s backup crew was immediately called up for Apollo 7. (Originally the two flights were called AS-204 and AS-205. The former was renamed Apollo 1 after the fire; Apollo missions 2 through 6 were uncrewed.) This would be the third spaceflight for crew commander Wally Schirra, 45, an accomplished U.S. Navy test pilot and one of the original Mercury Seven. He flew a successful six-orbit Mercury flight in Sigma 7 in late 1962, and maneuvered Gemini 6 to the world’s first space rendezvous in December 1965. On the ground, Schirra was irreverent and a master of the ‘gotcha’ practical joke, but in flight he was a crisp, no-nonsense space pilot. In the 1960’s, the North American built X-15 would not only take us to the edge of space, but set a world speed record which remains unbroken.

Compared to the heady post-war days when it seemed the sky was quite literally the limit, X-Planes in the modern era have become more utilitarian in nature. They are often proposed but never built, and if they do get built, the trend has been towards unmanned subscale vehicles due to their lower cost and risk. The few full-scale piloted X-Planes of the 21st century have largely been prototypes for new military fighter jets rather than scientific research aircraft.
