Searching for a close encounter in Nevada

Living in Santa Cruz County, one of the most congested areas of the country, it is a luxury to drive on one without bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Road trips’especially in remote areas’have always been an attractive vacation for me. And earlier this month I was finally able to experience one that I’d been wanting to for years.

My friend and I met at Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport early on a Friday evening. She had flown from Portland, Oregon and I from San Jose. We were in town for a concert, but that wasn’t for another two days. Neither of us are gamblers, and our shallow pockets prevented us from attending more shows. So we chose to rent a car and take off into the desert first thing Saturday morning.

Many things are taking place:

Steve Alford, Nevada close to deal to make him Wolf Pack head coach, report says

Nevada hasn’t been searching for a new head coach for long. Former Wolf Pack coach Eric Musselman, who won 110 games in his four seasons at Nevada, left the program for Arkansas on Sunday after leading Nevada to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last three seasons. His Wolf Pack team reached the Sweet 16 in 2018, however, it lost to Florida in the first round of the 2019 tournament.

Alford was fired by the Bruins in December after starting the season 7-6. He went 124-63 over six seasons, making four NCAA Tournament appearances. He previously coached at New Mexico, Iowa and Missouri State before taking the UCLA job in 2013.

Nevada assistant Gus Argenal a candidate for ISU men’s basketball head coaching job

Nevada men’s basketball assistant coach Gus Argenal is a candidate to become the next head men’s basketball coach at Idaho State, the Journal confirmed Wednesday.

Argenal was on ISU’s campus Wednesday, according to ISU Athletic Director Pauline Semons Thiros. He is one of three candidates to be invited to Pocatello for the final stages of the nationwide search for the Bengals’ next coach, Semons Thiros said. The other two candidates are unknown by the Journal at this time.

Argenal has spent the last two seasons at Nevada under former head coach Eric Musselman, who was recently hired to be the head coach at Arkansas. The Wolf Pack have a record of 58-13 with Argenal on the coaching staff and have won the Mountain West Conference’s regular-season title each season.
