Photos Show NASA Perseverance Rover Landing on Mars

The newest Martian, a robot named Perseverance, is alive and well after its first day and night on the red planet, NASA scientists and engineers said on Friday. Members of the triumphant team managing the spacecraft were exhilarated as they shared pictures captured by its cameras during landing and after the rover reached the surface.

‘As scientists, we’re used to the engineers showing us animations of the rover, and that’s at first what I thought this was,’ said Katie Stack Morgan, a deputy project scientist for the mission at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, referring to one of the pictures. ‘And then I did a double take and said that’s the actual rover.’

Touchdown! NASA’s Mars Perseverance Rover Safely Lands on Red Planet ‘ NASA’s Mars Exploration Program

The agency’s latest and most complex mission to the Red Planet has touched down at Jezero Crater. Now it’s time to begin testing the health of the rover.

The largest, most advanced rover NASA has sent to another world touched down on Mars Thursday, after a 203-day journey traversing 293 million miles (472 million kilometers). Confirmation of the successful touchdown was announced in mission control at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California at 3:55 p.m. EST (12:55 p.m. PST).

Packed with groundbreaking technology, the Mars 2020 mission launched July 30, 2020, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The Perseverance rover mission marks an ambitious first step in the effort to collect Mars samples and return them to Earth.

Mars landing: NASA celebrates as Perseverance rover lands successfully

“I almost feel like I’m in a dream,” said Jennifer Trosper, deputy project manager. “Our job is to think of all the bad things that can happen and try to avoid those, and when all good things happen, you feel like you’re dreaming. And I’m happy to feel like I’m dreaming!”

President Biden tweeted: “Congratulations to NASA and everyone whose hard work made Perseverance’s historic landing possible.”

Congratulations to NASA and everyone whose hard work made Perseverance’s historic landing possible. Today proved once again that with the power of science and American ingenuity, nothing is beyond the realm of possibility.

NASA’s astrobiology rover Perseverance makes historic Mars landing

Mission managers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) near Los Angeles burst into applause, cheers and fist-bumps as radio beacons signaled that the rover had survived its perilous descent and arrived as planned on the floor of Jezero Crater, site of a long-vanished Martian lake bed.

The six-wheeled vehicle came to rest about 2 kilometers from towering cliffs at the foot of a remnant fan-shaped river delta etched into a corner of the crater billions of years ago and considered a prime spot for geo-biological study on Mars.

‘Touchdown confirmed,’ Swati Mohan, the lead guidance and operations specialist announced from the control room. ‘Perseverance safely on the surface of Mars.’
