Here’s How NASA Might Rescue InSight’s Extremely Stuck Heat Probe

Back in February, the heat probe of NASA’s InSight lander didn’t get very far while trying to tunnel a hole into Mars. It’s been stuck ever since, but NASA has devised a plan in the hopes of getting the probe moving again.

NASA’s InSight lander arrived at Elysium Planitia, a plain near the Martian equator, back in November 2018. On 28 February 2019, the lander began an important phase of the mission: deploying its heat probe, a component of the Heat Flow and Physical Properties Package (HP3). Designed by the German Aerospace Center, the probe, or ‘mole,’ is designed to measure the amount of heat escaping from beneath the Martian surface, and it was supposed to get as deep as 5 metres (16 feet).

Hacking Mars: InSight Mole Is On The Move Again

Your job might be tough, but spare a thought for any of the engineers involved in the Mars InSight lander mission when they learned that one of the flagship instruments aboard the lander, indeed the very instrument for which the entire mission was named, appeared to be a dud. That’s a bad day at work by anyone’s standards, and it happened over the summer when it was reported that the Mars Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport lander’s Heat Flow and Physical Properties Package (HP’), commonly known as ‘The Mole’, was not drilling itself into the Martian regolith as planned.
