NASA Wallops May 8 Rocket Launch Visible in Eastern United States

A four-stage Black Brant XII rocket will be used for the mission that includes the release of barium vapor that will form two green-violet clouds that may be visible for about 30 seconds. The barium vapor is not harmful to the environment or public health

The mission, called the KiNETic-scale energy and momentum transport eXperiment, or KiNet-X, is designed to study a very fundamental problem in space plasmas, namely, how are energy and momentum transported between different regions of space that are magnetically connected?’

The vapor will be released approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds to around 10 minutes after launch at about 217-249 miles altitude over the Atlantic Ocean and 540-560 miles downrange from Wallops and just north of Bermuda.

Saturday night NASA rocket launch may be visible across eastern US

(Gray News) ‘ When NASA launches its Black Brant XII sounding rocket Friday night, much of the Eastern United States might be able to take in the spectacle.

A map from the space agency shows the rocket potentially visible from Maine to central Florida and from the East Coast as far west as Illinois.

The launch is scheduled for no earlier than Saturday, May 8, at 8:02 p.m. EDT from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. There’s a 40-minute launch window.

UPDATE: NASA reschedules rocket launch for Saturday; should be visible along East Coast

Want to watch a rocket launch? NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility on Virginia’s Eastern Shore will send a suborbital sounding rocket into space Saturday evening, and it should be visible across much of the eastern United States.

The mission to explore energy transport is set to launch at 8:02 p.m. Saturday, May 8, which a 40-minute launch window. Backup launch days run through May 16.’

For example, auroras. Auroras are formed when particles in the Earth’s near-space environment interact with the atmosphere.

‘The electrons in Earth’s space environment and in the solar wind have relatively low energies. ‘Yet the aurora is generated by very high energy electrons. ‘What is the energization mechanism?’ said Peter Delamere, KiNET-X principal investigator from the University of Alaska – Fairbanks.

NASA Postpones Wallops Rocket Launch To Saturday Night

[MAY 6 UPDATE] ‘ NASA is postponing the launch of the KiNET-X sounding rocket from its Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia due to weather. The launch was originally scheduled for Friday evening, but it has been pushed back to no earlier than Saturday, May 8 at 8:02 p.m.

The launch would be visible to much of the East Coast with clear skies. But unfortunately for New England, the forecast for Saturday night calls for lots of clouds.

Not great news for viewing here in New England. Likely to be lots of clouds around late Saturday. https://t.co/XsF0gHhxBh

NASA Wallops Rocket Launch Friday Night Could be Visible Along East Coast

ATLANTIC, Va.-‘A mission to explore energy transport in space using a NASA suborbital sounding rocket launching May 8, 2021, from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia may provide a brief light show for residents of the eastern United States and Bermuda. The mission is scheduled for no earlier than 8:02 p.m. EDT with a 40-minute launch window, Saturday, May 8. Backup launch days run through May 16. The launch may be visible, weather permitting, in much of the eastern United States from the Atlantic coast to the Mississippi River.

Immediately after release of the vapor, the spherical clouds are a mixture of green and violet, but that phase only lasts about 30 seconds when the un-ionized component of the cloud has diffused away. After exposure to sunlight the vapor clouds quickly ionize and take on a violet color.

NASA Rocket Launch From Wallops Island Could Be Visible Friday

WALLOPS ISLAND, VA ‘ NASA is set to launch a rocket from its Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia on Friday at 7:58 p.m. If skies are clear ‘ and that’s a big if for people in the D.C. area ‘ the launch should be visible to people up and down the eastern seaboard.

The mission is called KiNet-X, with the Black Brant XII rocket blasting off. This study will help scientists better understand things like Auroras and how they are formed and their movement from place to place.

The rocket will release a barium vapor about 9-10 minutes into the flight north of Bermuda at an altitude of more than 200 miles. NASA will be studying the vapor release with diagnostic instrumentation onboard the rocket.
