WASHINGTON ‘ NASA representatives will be part of an ongoing SpaceX investigation into an engine anomaly on a recent Falcon 9 launch as the company prepares for a Crew Dragon mission carrying two NASA astronauts.

‘According to the CCtCap contracts, SpaceX is required to make available to NASA all data and resulting reports,’ Finch said. ‘SpaceX, with NASA’s concurrence, would need to implement any corrective actions found during the investigation related to its commercial crew work prior to its flight test with astronauts to the International Space Station.’

That launch involved the fifth flight of that particular booster, the first time the company had attempted to fly a first stage that many times. The Antares (seen above not on fire) is the disposable launch vehicle for Orbital Sciences’ Cygnus spacecraft, which was awarded a Commercial Orbital Transportation Services contract several years ago. That’s the same program SpaceX operates under, but to be clear, Orbital Sciences Corp. and the Antares rocket have nothing to do with SpaceX. The Antares’has thus far made two’successful launches as part of the NASA contract. Roundup It has been a frustrating few days for space fans, with automatic safeties and virus fears stopping rocket-based play. Still, there was at least a glimmer of hope from the red planet.

Amid office closures and a general panicking of the populace, Arianespace bowed to the inevitable and called a halt to launch campaigns underway at its base in French Guiana, South America.

Measures introduced by the French government pretty much did for the space centre as worries over the health of staff and the local populace resulted in the “exceptional measure.”

Mixed Results for SpaceX

SpaceX, headquartered in Hawthorne, has launched roughly 300 small satellites into low Earth orbit. The latest effort by Hawthorne-based Space Exploration Technologies Corp. to increase its international broadband internet service produced mixed results.

But the Elon Musk-led company was unable to recover the first-stage booster of the Falcon 9 rocket used in the launch. That booster had been launched four times previously, a record for reusability for this component in the SpaceX launch system.

SpaceX has said that reusable hardware is key to its commercialization strategy because it keeps launch prices low.

SpaceX loses record-breaking rocket booster after sixth successful Starlink launch

Nevertheless, the rocket’s highly-attuned software and affected octaweb engine bunker did their jobs, instantly shutting the failing engine down while also preventing the explosion and resulting shrapnel from damaging the rest of the rocket. More likely than not, B1048’s autonomous decision to always put mission success before booster recovery lead the booster to expend a majority of the propellant needed for its landing attempt to make up for the 10 or so seconds operating at only ~89% thrust.

As a result, B1048 may have simultaneous subjected itself to a much more extreme atmospheric reentry and run out of propellant before it could complete (or maybe even start) its drone ship landing burn. There’s also a chance that the engine that failed was one of the three engines required for reentry and landing burns, an asymmetry that would be impossible to overcome on the fly. Ultimately, the booster likely impacted the ocean at a near-supersonic velocity, smashing it into aluminum confetti. Thankfully, the late B1048 had a record-breakingly productive career as an orbital-class booster, placing dozens of tons of payload into orbit over five successful launches. Its loss is regrettable but the booster has more than earned its keep.

NASA’s IRT publishes report on SpaceX’s CRS

On Monday, NASA’s Independent Review Team (IRT) published the first public report on the SpaceX CRS-7 failure. The accident occurred on June 28th, 2015 when a Falcon 9 rocket’s second stage experienced an over-pressurization event during first stage ascent. The incident led to a launch vehicle failure approximately two minutes and nineteen seconds into flight. SpaceX blamed the accident on a manufacturing defect involving a steel strut. However, the IRT report blames a design error on SpaceX’s behalf.

At approximately 14:21 UTC on June 28th, 2015 the Falcon 9 lifted off from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. For the first two minutes of flight, everything appeared nominal, and there were no indications of any problems.
