NASA’s SpaceX Crew-2 mission will carry astronauts Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur of NASA, Akihiko Hoshide of JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), and ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Thomas Pesquet aboard a Crew Dragon spacecraft atop a Falcon 9 rocket to the space station. The mission is scheduled to launch no earlier than April 20 from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Watch live today: NASA talks SpaceX Crew Dragon Demo

NASA will hold a press conference today to discuss the upcoming return to Earth of two astronauts on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon Endeavour and you can watch it live here.’

The press conference will begin at 3:30 p.m. EDT (1930 GMT) to update the public on the splashdown plans for NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley. SpaceX launched the two men on the Crew Dragon Endeavour May 30 as part of the company’s Demo-2 test flight for NASA. They’ve spent nearly two months on the station since then, with Behnken performing four spacewalks.’

SpaceX’s Crew Dragon is scheduled to return to Earth on Sunday (Aug. 2) to end the Demo-2 test flight. That return to Earth, however, depends on weather at the mission’s potential splashdown sites in the Atlantic Ocean.’

SpaceX Clips Dragon’s Wings After Investigation

When the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft reached orbit for the first time in 2010, it was a historic achievement. But to qualify for NASA’s Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) program, the capsule also needed to demonstrate that it could return safely to Earth. Its predecessor, the Space Shuttle, had wings that let it glide home and land like a plane. But in returning to the classic capsule design of earlier spacecraft, SpaceX was forced to rely on a technique not used by American spacecraft since the 1970s: parachutes and an ocean splashdown.

The Dragon’s descent under parachute, splashdown, and subsequent successful recovery paved the way for SpaceX to begin a series of resupply missions to the International Space Station that continue to this day. But not everyone at SpaceX was satisfied with their 21st century spacecraft having to perform such an anachronistic landing. At a post-mission press conference, CEO Elon Musk told those in attendance that eventually the Dragon would be able to make a pinpoint touchdown using thrusters and deployable landing gear:

NASA in talks with US space startup to secure 1 Soyuz seat

San Francisco, Feb 12 (IANS) NASA is reportedly in talks with the Texas-based aerospace firm Axiom Space which arranges private astronaut rides to space to secure a seat on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft that will transport astronauts to the International Space Station.

NASA is negotiating with Axiom Space to keep the Soyuz seat as a backup in the event of a problem with the upcoming ride with SpaceX, The Verge reported on Thursday.

The US space agency earlier this week said that it is considering providing in-kind services for this supplemental crew transportation service, rather than an exchange of funds.
