Live coverage of the spacecrafts descent to the asteroids surface for its Touch-And-Go, or TAG, maneuver, which will be managed by Lockheed Martin Space near Denver, will begin at 5 p.m. on NASA Television and the agencys website.

Beginning with an orbit departure maneuver around 1:50 p.m., the full sequence of the complicated engineering feat will be covered on @OSIRISREx, and media and the public can ask questions using the hashtag #ToBennuandBack.

In addition to the broadcast Tuesday, Oct. 18, briefings and social media activities will cover the mission and asteroid science on Monday, Oct. 19.

NASA prepares to touch down on an asteroid 207 million miles away

NASA is preparing to pull off a daring heist: Next month the robotic spacecraft OSIRIS-REx will touch down on the surface of asteroid Bennu and collect a sample, aiming to precisely touch this tiny asteroid just 260 meters wide and which is currently around 207 million miles away from Earth.

But it’s no easy task to scoop up a sample from an object that’s so far away. Due to the distance from Earth, it’s not possible to control the OSIRIS-REx craft in real-time. So on the day of the event, October 20, it will have to act autonomously to maneuver and approach the asteroid using a pre-determined sequence.

NASA to Provide Update on Agency’s First Asteroid Sample Collection Attempt

The Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft will travel to the asteroid’s surface during its first sample collection attempt Oct. 20. Its sampling mechanism will touch Bennu’s surface for several seconds, fire a charge of pressurized nitrogen to disturb the surface, and collect a sample before the spacecraft backs away.

In response to rocky conditions discovered on the asteroid’s surface when OSIRIS-REx began orbiting Bennu in 2018, the mission team has reduced the sample area to one-tenth of the original plan. This means the spacecraft must target Bennu’s surface with even greater accuracy.

NASA picks site on asteroid Bennu where it will grab space rock sample

Scientists identified’four potential sites before picking a spot dubbed ‘Nightingale’ that is located in Bennu’s northern hemisphere.

‘After thoroughly evaluating all four candidate sites, we made our final decision based on which site has the greatest amount of fine-grained material and how easily the spacecraft can access that material while keeping the spacecraft safe,’ said Dante Lauretta, OSIRIS-REx principal investigator at the University of Arizona in Tucson, in a statement. ‘Of the four candidates, site Nightingale best meets these criteria and, ultimately, best ensures mission success.’
