A team at NASA’s Langley Research Center, with partners from NASA Ames Research Center,’NanoAvionics, and Santa Clara University’s Robotics Systems Lab, is developing’a’deployable’lightweight’composite boom and solar sail system for the’Advanced Composite Solar Sail System (ACS3)’mission,’the first use of composite booms for a solar sail in orbit.’

The system is solar powered,’an alternative to’rocket propellant’and electrical propulsion systems.’Relying on sunlight offers’options in spacecraft design that might otherwise be unavailable.’

The’composite’booms are deployed from a’12-unit (12U)’CubeSat, a’cost-effective’nanosatellite’measuring only 23 cm x 34 cm.’When compared to traditional metallic deployable booms, the ACS3’booms’are 75% lighter and’experience’100 times less thermal distortion’when exposed to heat.’

Houston, are we going to have a problem with space nuclear power?

Nuclear propulsion is the fastest way to send a manned mission to Mars, as the United States proposes to do in the late 2030s. But nuclear power can also be useful for other activities in space that require more electricity than solar panels can currently provide, such as harvesting ice from the Moon to provide drinking water and generate rocket propellant for future lunar explorers, and powering radar arrays to map the Earth.

NASA and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine have outlined the benefits of nuclear propulsion for space exploration and made important proposals to develop the technologies needed to send humans to Mars. As useful as this work is, space nuclear power isn’t just about propulsion. The dynamic commercial space and national security sectors can also benefit from nuclear capabilities and have an important role to play in developing dual-use technologies that have both military and civilian applications, though with some caveats to ensure human safety.

Long March 3B launches Chinasat-18

China launched Zhongxing-18 (or Chinasat-18) ‘ a civilian communications satellite ‘ on Monday via the use of a Long March-3B/G2 (Chang Zheng-3B/G2) rocket. The launch took place at 12:03 UTC from the LC2 pad at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center. However, the usual announcement of a successful separation has yet to published by Chinese State media. Originally scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2019, the ZX-18 is based on the DFH-4E satellite bus. It will be used for civil telecommunications for Chinese TV, phone, radio and internet.

It is equipped with 30 Ku-band transponders, Ka broadband communication services with 14 Ka-band MSS spot user beams and Ka-band broadcasting services with 2 Ka BSS-band transponders within the service coverage areas.
