How technology might finally start telling farmers things they didn’t already know
As a machine operator for the robotics startup FarmWise, Diego Alc’ntar spends each day walking behind a hulking robot that resembles a driverless Zamboni, helping it learn to do the work of a 30-person weeding crew.’
On a Tuesday morning in September, I met Alc’ntar in a gigantic cauliflower field in the hills outside Santa Maria, at the southern end of the vast checkerboard of vegetable farms that line California’s central coast, running from Oxnard north to Salinas and Watsonville. Cooled by coastal mists rolling off the Pacific, the Salinas valley is sometimes called America’s Salad Bowl. Together with two adjacent counties to the south, the area around Salinas produces the vast majority of lettuce grown in the US during the summer months, along with most of the cauliflower, celery, and broccoli, and a good share of the berries.’

From TACSAT to JUMPSEAT: Hughes and the top secret Gyrostat satellite gamble
Starting in August 1968, the secretive National Reconnaissance Office began launching new intelligence satellites into much higher orbits to accomplish their missions. The first was the CANYON series of communications intelligence satellites, followed in 1970 by the first of the RHYOLITE telemetry interception satellites. In spring 1971, the NRO launched a new and enigmatic satellite named JUMPSEAT, which has remained perhaps the most mysterious of these high-orbit satellites. Each of these satellites pushed the state of the art in terms of payloads, antennas, and satellite design. But JUMPSEAT represented a concerted effort by a civil and commercial satellite designer to break into the top-secret world of satellite intelligence by leveraging a new technology and a military contract to demonstrate that it could perform the mission of both detecting signals from the ground, and spotting missile launches with an infrared telescope.

Central Florida 100: The siege on the U.S. Capitol
Looking ahead: REMEMBER SCOTT AND GAETZ: Now that the ‘Dirty Dozen’ have failed to snatch the will of the voters away from them, the voters need to be reminded of those like Sen. Rick Scott and Rep. Matt Gaetz, among others, who were traitors to the constitutional will of the voters. It’s like Gaetz continues to audition to be the clown at the rodeo. He is willing to be run ahead of the bull to distract him or even cower in the barrel. Fortunately, this sideshow is drawing to a close and leaving town. Scott and Gaetz should show the same gesture or be voted out of office.
