NASA seeks input on Artemis science goals

WASHINGTON ‘ NASA is seeking ideas from scientists on the research astronauts could carry out on the first Artemis lunar landing mission in 2024.

NASA announced Aug. 21 it seeking brief white papers on the science the astronauts on the Artemis 3 mission can carry out. The papers, no more than two pages long, are due to the agency by Sept. 8.

The papers will support work by a science definition team in NASA’s Science Mission Directorate to develop science objectives for the Artemis 3 mission. That team will also use a number of other resources, ranging from the planetary science decadal survey to a ‘roadmap’ for lunar science created by an advisory group, the Lunar Exploration Analysis Group.

NASA shows off stunning new Moon lander concept

As NASA gets ready to return to the Moon in 2024, the space agency is working on new designs for a lunar lander, including a futuristic design it shared on Monday.

NASA showed off concept art of a lander that will use “top-tier technology” in order to not only land on Earth’s celestial satellite, but collect data from it as well. One recent study showed that a “mid-sized” lander would have a rover go to the polar regions of the Moon, NASA said in a release on its website.

America must return to the moon ‘as soon as possible’

Forty-eight years ago, when Apollo 17, the last Apollo mission to the moon, departed the valley of Taurus-Littrow, I never imagined that next crew would come at least 52 years later. As a nation we cannot continue to have such gaps, if we intend to maintain our global leadership in space exploration, expand our commercial sphere of activities away from Earth orbit, and secure the benefits of the moon for future generations.

The future of humanity, the concept of freedom, and the pride and aspirations of Americans have expanded into space. The Apollo experience shows that human exploration of the solar system is one of those ideas that bring peoples together and harnesses the tremendous commercial resources of the United States. There is no acceptable choice for America’s future but to return to the Moon to stay, and to do so as soon as possible.

Under this Request for Information (RFI), NASA is seeking information and gathering community feedback on the Planetary Data Ecosystem (PDE) in preparation for the creation of a PDE Independent Review Board (IRB). NASA defines the PDE’as the ad hoc connected framework of activities and products that are built upon and support the data collected by planetary space missions and research programs, primarily those funded by NASA.’The PDE includes but is not limited to archives, tools, programs, projects, pipelines, and stakeholder groups. Responses to this RFI will provide community input on the i) ideal, ii) current, and iii) future state of the PDE. Responses may address questions such as, but not limited to:
