Poland will build instrument for Princeton

NASA and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Poland agreed on Dec. 30 to cooperate on a NASA heliophysics mission, the Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP), which is led by Princeton’s David McComas, a professor of astrophysical sciences.

The agreement will allow the Space Research Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences’to design and build one of IMAP’s 10 instruments ‘ the Global Solar Wind Structure (GLOWS) instrument ‘ as well as provide ground support and personnel necessary to support the instrument and the IMAP science team.

Space Dynamics Lab Achieves Critical Milestone for NASA Space Weather Mission

Utah State University’s Space Dynamics Laboratory announced that it has successfully completed the’Key Decision Point (KDP) C for NASA’s’Atmospheric Waves Experiment (AWE).’KDP-C’provides NASA approval for the project to begin final design and fabrication, known as Phase C, and establishes baselines for its official schedule and budget.

Planned to be ready for launch to the International Space Station in 2022, AWE will study atmospheric gravity waves in Earth’s atmosphere to gain deeper knowledge of the connections caused by climate systems through our atmosphere and between the atmosphere and space. The AWE mission is part of NASA’s Explorers Program under the Goddard Space Flight Center Explorers and Heliophysics Projects Division and is led by Principal Investigator Dr. Michael J. Taylor at Utah State University. The Space Dynamics Laboratory will build the AWE instrument and is also providing project management, systems engineering, safety and mission assurance, and mission operations.

Navy Launches Satellites to Study Solar Flares

U.S. Naval Research Laboratory researchers are partnering with Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) to shine a light on the effect of the solar atmosphere on the interplanetary medium between the Earth and the Sun.

NASA is funding much of the effort for this Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere (Punch) program. The mission is to study the Sun’s outer corona. By studying this interplanetary medium, researchers gain a better understanding of how solar events effect Earth’s atmosphere and magnetic field.

‘This mission really has two focuses,’ said Robin Colaninno, Ph.D., an astrophysicist with NRL’s Space Science Division. ‘Trying to look at the creation of the solar wind from the corona and then also looking at the propagation of the coronal mass ejections in the solar wind.’

Three spaceships are more than half way to the Red Planet

Orbiter missions from the United Arab Emirates and China, as well as rovers from the Chinese and American space agencies are due to arrive by the middle of February.’

Each of the vessels are currently hurtling through space at thousands of miles per hour, gathering data about the space between the two worlds to send back home.

The NASA mission is the largest, sending the next generation of rover that will follow in the footsteps of Curiosity in revealing more about our neighbouring world.
