NASA Is Developing ‘Soft Robots’ to Help Explore Other Worlds

Two interns at NASA are part of a larger group working on “soft robots” that could be used for exploring worlds beyond Earth. This includes the moon, NASA’s next major destination for astronauts.

The advantage of a soft robot is that it’s flexible and, in some ways, better able to adapt to new environments. Soft robots move in ways similar to living organisms, which expands their range of motion, perhaps making it easier to squeeze into a tight spot, for example.

Interns Chuck Sullivan and Jack Fitzpatrick are working at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, to create soft robot actuators. (Actuators are machine components that control a robot’s moving parts.)

SpaceX Dragon Successfully Launches NASA Cargo To Space Station

The SpaceX Dragon cargo mission is on its way to the International Space Station (ISS), along with 5,500 pounds of NASA supplies and science investigations’such as’research on’the Earth’s carbon cycle and asteroid and comet formation.

The Dragon cargo mission was successfully launched after a failed’Main Bus Switching Unit (MBSU) aboard ISS was replaced with a spare. The MSBU is responsible for the robotic arm that’receives supplies’from SpaceX’s Dragon. The replacement of a spare MSBU for the robotics did not involve a spacewalk.

Squishy Robotics, a Berkeley startup, is beta testing its squishy shape-shifting, sensory robots, with potential applications to provide critical information about disaster zones.

Structurally, these robots might appear frail, but their crisscrossed cable structure is designed to withstand enormous drops of up to 600 feet. Squishy Robotics, a business supported by Berkeley startup incubator Skydeck, is currently collaborating with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, or LACoFD, and the Houston Fire Department, or HFD, to beta test the robots.
