Two interns at NASA are part of a larger group working on “soft robots” that could be used for exploring worlds beyond Earth. This includes the moon, NASA’s next major destination for astronauts.

The advantage of a soft robot is that it’s flexible and, in some ways, better able to adapt to new environments. Soft robots move in ways similar to living organisms, which expands their range of motion, perhaps making it easier to squeeze into a tight spot, for example.

Interns Chuck Sullivan and Jack Fitzpatrick are working at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, to create soft robot actuators. (Actuators are machine components that control a robot’s moving parts.)

“When you actuate the soft robot, it changes how you use the material properties,” Fitzpatrick said in a statement. “A piece of rubber going from flat to the shape of a finger, it changes the material into something else.”

Nasa unleashes weird ‘soft robots’ which look like alien sex toys

But Nasa’s latest ‘droids buck the trend for mechanistic design and look more like bizarre alien sex toys than shiny Terminator-style robots.

The space agency is working to develop ‘soft robots’ which resemble the arms of Marvel Comics supervillain Doctor Octopus, it announced.

They are currently being built by two ‘genius interns’ at the Langley Research Centre in Virginia.

Chuck Sullivan said: ‘What we’re investigating is the viability of soft robotics in space exploration and assembly.’

‘We are trying to see the basic capabilities of soft robots. That way when someone down the road says maybe soft robotics is useful in a different application they can look at our work as a baseline.’

Jeff Bezos unveils lunar lander to take astronauts to the moon by 2024

WASHINGTON ‘ Jeff Bezos, chairman of Amazon and founder of Blue Origin, unveiled his space company’s lunar lander for the first time on Thursday.

“This vehicle is going to the moon,” Bezos said during an invite-only presentation to media and space industry executives.

Bezos also unveiled the company’s BE-7 rocket engine at the event. The engine will be test fired for the first time this summer, Bezos said. It’s largely made of “printed” parts, he added.
