Robotic Navigation Tech ‘ That Helped NASA’s Perseverance Rover Land on Mars ‘ Will Explore the Deep Ocean

The Orpheus submersible robot is being developed by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and JPL to explore the deep ocean autonomously. Orpheus uses vision-based navigation that works in a similar way to how the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter navigates during flight. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech

On May 14, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) ship Okeanos Explorer departed from Port Canaveral in Florida on a two-week expedition led by NOAA Ocean Exploration, featuring the technology demonstration of an autonomous underwater vehicle. Called Orpheus, this new class of submersible robot will showcase a system that will help it find its way and identify interesting scientific features on the seafloor.

NASA teams up with deep-sea explorers to prep for Europa missions and beyond

Hopefully sometime in the near future, NASA will launch missions to explore the moons of Saturn and Jupiter, especially the mysterious icy world of Europa.’To properly prep themselves for these challenging new endeavors, the space agency is teaming up with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to test out a new deep-sea underwater craft that could prove useful in exploring alien subsurface oceans.

NASA partners with deep-ocean explorers to develop tech for Europa mission

The new underwater vehicle, called Orpheus, relies on autonomous navigation software developed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California for the Mars Perseverance rover and the Ingenuity helicopter. The primary task for the mini-submarine, which was built by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in Massachusetts, will be to advance humanity’s understanding of the deepest regions of the oceans, the so-called hadal zone.

Stennis Space Center playing vital role in NASA’s many missions

The upcoming months have been identified as a Year of Innovation as NASA focuses on three key areas ‘ the Artemis program to return to the Moon in a sustainable way as preparation for future missions to Mars, continued cutting-edge climate and Earth science research, and a focus on equity as we work to ensure full participation in the NASA mission by all segments of our workforce and communities.

Green Run testing of the first SLS core stage was accomplished earlier this spring, and preparations now are underway for launch of the inaugural Artemis I mission. Meanwhile, we are continuing to test RS-25 single engines for use on SLS and are beginning preparations to test the Exploration Upper Stage unit when it is completed. Our innovative Autonomous Systems Lab also is working to design, develop, and test new smart capabilities that could be used on Artemis and SLS hardware and missions.
