[ NASA Curiosity rover celebrates 3,000 days on Mars with extreme panorama ]
A Martian day — called a “sol”– is slightly longer than a day on Earth, clocking in at just over 24 hours and 39 minutes. Scientists track Curiosity’s activities based on sols. For example, raw images taken by the rover are tagged with the sol number, so a photo snapped on its anniversary would be tagged with “Sol 3000” as well as the corresponding Earth date.

The sweeping panorama is made from 122 images the rover snapped on Nov. 18, 2020, which was Martian sol 2946.

NASA’s Curiosity Rover Reaches Its 3,000th Day on Mars Since Touching Down in 2012
(NASA) ‘ It’s been 3,000 Martian days, or sols, since Curiosity touched down on Mars on Aug. 6, 2012, and the rover keeps making new discoveries during its gradual climb up Mount Sharp, the 3-mile-tall (5-kilometer-tall) mountain it has been exploring since 2014.
Geologists were intrigued to see a series of rock ‘benches’ in the most recent panorama from the mission.
Stitched together from 122 images taken on Nov. 18, 2020, the mission’s 2,946th sol, the panorama was captured by the Mast Camera, or Mastcam, which serves as the rover’s main ‘eyes.’
Toward the center of the panorama is the floor of Gale Crater, the 96-mile-wide (154 kilometer-wide) bowl that Mount Sharp sits within.

Nasa’s Curiosity rover: 3,000 days on Mars
When we got these images down in June 2018 it was a big relief for the team, even though it was a rather dusty time on Mars. That’s because it marked the restart of drilling operations by the rover. “Duluth” was the first rock sample successfully drilled (see centre of the image for the drill hole) since October 2016. A mechanical issue had taken the drill offline. By June 2018, a new technique had been planned and tested by the JPL engineers, letting us get back to the crucial drilling, without which our work had been held back.
Twice every Martian year, near the seasonal equinoxes, the paths of the Martian moons Phobos and Deimos cross in front of the Sun as seen by Curiosity. This animation shows the 22km diameter Phobos in transit across the sun on Sol 2359. The transit lasted about 35 seconds. The precise timing of transits measured in observations like this helps scientists understand the tidal interactions between Phobos and Mars.

Pictures from space! Our image of the day
Jan. 12, 2021: Astronauts practice for spaceflight here on Earth in a number of unique ways, including underwater. In this image, astronauts practiced a maneuver designed for the International Space Station underwater at the Neutral Buoyancy Lab, which is operated by NASA. At this testing facility, astronauts get completely suited up as if they were about to go out on a spacewalk and perform spacewalk tasks underwater on a mock space station.’
Later this month, NASA astronauts Victor Glover and Mike Hopkins will put their training to the test as they will embark on a spacewalk during which they will install a small, fridge-sized device on the outside of the space station’s Columbus module. — Chelsea Gohd

Mystery of the ‘alien tower’ on the moon is solved: Lunar expert claims spire is actually a small crater on the rim of larger one
The 3.5-mile (5.6km) high structure was spotted in images from Google Moon, with some believing it to be a ‘launch pad’ that was constructed by aliens.’
Now, however, a researcher working with Nasa’s LROC moon-mapping mission claims the strange mark is nothing more than a crater within a crater.’
A researcher working with Nasa’s LROC moon-mapping mission has debunked images claiming to capture a 3.5-mile (5.6km) spire for vehicle landings on the moon’s surface.
