A Minnesota woman wants to make waves in the fashion world by becoming the first person with Down Syndrome to be featured in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.

Mikayla Holmgren, 26, is already the first woman with the condition to compete in a Miss USA pageant, a feat she accomplished in 2017.

‘We tell all our people who have special needs or Down syndrome, go ahead and do it,’ Holmgren said in Friday’s episode of ‘PEOPLE (the TV Show).’

Mikayla competed in the pageant back in 2017 where she achieved great success, taking home both the Spirit of Miss USA and the Director’s awards. Now she has her sights set on a new trail-blazing milestone.

Writing about her bid on her popular Instagram account, Mikayla explained her motivations for auditioning:

Everyone is talking about inclusion right now and one of the most underrepresented groups is people with special needs. I would love to be the beacon of hope for so many young girls who can relate to me.

Mikayla Holmgren Sets Out to Be First Woman With Down Syndrome in Coveted ‘Sports Illustrated’ Swimsuit Issue

In February she submitted her casting tape for the mag’s 2021 SI Swim search. Wearing a blue-and-white striped two-piece bathing suit, Holmgren smiles cheerfully and says: ‘SI Swim has been such a champion of diversity of beauty, and now is the time to include someone like me [as she points to herself]. I am the first woman with Down syndrome in the Miss USA state pageant.’ Then’jokes,’I rocked my bathing suit on stage. Now it’s time to rock the magazine.’ She continues: “All women deserve to be celebrated. We need awareness for those with special needs.”

Holmgren told Inside Edition Digital that she is not nervous at all, but excited and hopeful. ‘I just want to build awareness for those with special needs and especially those with Down syndrome,’ she said.’

A dancer with Down syndrome hopes to be the first swimsuit model with the condition to appear in Sports Illustrated magazine. Mikayla Holmgren, 26, has approached the prestigious magazine to ask to be featured, and shared her story in the hopes of inspiring others.

She sent in a video audition for Sports Illustrated’s famed swimwear edition, and said: ‘Now is the time to include someone like me.’

Mikayla, from Marine St Croix in Minnesota, said: ‘All women need to be celebrated. Just be yourself.’Follow your dreams and you can do it. Modeling is a passion and a creative art.’
