In 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright flew a plane’for 12 seconds, 120 feet in the air, on what is now known as the first powered-controlled flight on Earth. Now, 118 years later, the first powered-controlled attempt at a flight on another planet is about to take place.

According to NASA, Ingenuity ‘ the four-pound rotorcraft attached to Perseverance ‘ is on its way to its “airfield” on Mars.’

The space agency announced that its target for its first takeoff attempt will happen no earlier than April 8, 2021.’

NASA pushes back the launch of its Ingenuity Mars helicopter’s first flight

Takeoff of the 4-pound (1.8-kilogram) robotic helicopter, currently attached to NASA‘s Perseverance rover, is now slated for no earlier than April 11.’

Deployment of Ingenuity, which has become affectionately known as ‘Ginny’, had been originally planned for April 8.

If successful, Ingenuity will be the first powered and controlled flight of an aircraft on any planet other than Earth.’

Ingenuity carries a small amount of fabric that covered one of the wings of the Wright brothers’ aircraft, known as the Flyer, during the first powered, controlled flight on Earth in 1903.’

NASA primed for historic flight of experimental Mars helicopter

NASA’s Perseverance rover will soon release a small rotorcraft onto the surface of Mars and drive a safe distance away to observe a series of historic test flights in the ultra-thin Martian atmosphere, which could begin around April 8, officials said this week.

The Mars Helicopter, named Ingenuity, has been stowed underneath the deck of the Perseverance rover for nearly one year. Ground crews at the Kennedy Space Center installed the 4-pound (1.8-kilogram) rotorcraft onto the belly of the rover April 6, 2020, during preparations for Perseverance’s launch last July.

Controllers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory are now preparing to send commands to release the Ingenuity helicopter. The rover released a debris cover March 21 to reveal the helicopter. The carbon-fiber shield protected Ingenuity from rocks and dust kicked up during the rover’s landing on Mars on Feb. 18.

German COVID-19 cases jump by most since early Jan

BERLIN, March 25 (Reuters) – The number of new confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany jumped on Thursday by 22,657 to 2.713 million, the biggest increase since Jan. 9 as the country struggles to agree measures to contain the third wave of the pandemic.

The number of cases per 100,000 in the last seven days, which the German government has used as a key metric to decide on lockdown steps, rose to 113 from 108 on Wednesday.

Chancellor Angela Merkel rejected on Wednesday demands for a vote of confidence in her government over a U-turn on a circuit-breaker lockdown over Easter that compounded discontent with her handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

NASA Ingenuity Mars Helicopter Prepares for First Flight

WASHINGTON, March 23, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — NASA is targeting no earlier than April 8 for the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter to make the first attempt at powered, controlled flight of an aircraft on another planet. Before the 4-pound (1.8-kilogram) rotorcraft can attempt its first flight, however, both it and its team must meet a series of daunting milestones.

Ingenuity remains attached to the belly of NASA’s Perseverance rover, which touched down on Mars Feb. 18. On March 21, the rover deployed the guitar case-shaped graphite composite debris shield that protected Ingenuity during landing. The rover currently is in transit to the “airfield” where Ingenuity will attempt to fly. Once deployed, Ingenuity will have 30 Martian days, or sols, (31 Earth days) to conduct its test flight campaign.
