Is ‘Race Science’ Making A Comeback? : Code Switch

When Angela Saini was 10 years old, her family moved from what she called “a very multicultural area” in East London to the almost exclusively white Southeast London. Suddenly her brown skin stood out, making her a target. She couldn’t avoid the harassment coming from two boys who lived around the corner. One day, they pelted her and her sister with rocks. She remembers one hit her on the head. She remembers bleeding.

There had been racist comments before that, she says, “but that was the first time that someone around my own age had decided to physically hurt me. And it was tough.”

It made me decide to ditch Chrome for a new version of nonprofit Mozilla’s Firefox, which has default privacy protections. Switching involved less inconvenience than you might imagine.

Chrome is even sneakier on your phone. If you use Android, Chrome sends Google your location every time you conduct a search. (If you turn off location sharing it still sends your coordinates out, just with less accuracy.)

NASA Reopens Apollo Mission Control Room That Once Landed Men on Moon

HOUSTON ‘ After Gene Kranz retired in the 1990s, he started to give occasional tours to V.I.P.s at NASA’s Johnson Space Center.

Mr. Kranz would have to show up early before each tour to police the place. He had to pick up trash left on computer consoles that had once landed men on the moon. Water bottles, Coke cans. He would empty brimming wastebaskets.

‘This place was not representative of historic mission control,’ Mr. Kranz said. It was likewise a technical mess. ‘The configuration of the consoles in no way represented where we were and what we did.’
