Ninety-four per cent of year 4 students achieved’the level expected in science’last year compared to 20 per cent of year 8 students ‘ the lowest achievement of any part of the curriculum’the’National Monitoring Study of Student Achievement (NMSSA) found.

“Even before that there was push for improvement in those areas … As a result there has been less focus on science,” she said.

So yesterday, I went to the printer to get some background material and had to wait for 10 minutes while a fellow journalist printed out a book.

It was the National Monitoring Study of Student Achievement. It wasn’t the first time I came across this report, but these days it’s gained more importance because ever since the incoming government scrapped National Standards, it is one of the few tools we have to measure the effectiveness of our education.

It’s a survey done every five years by the University of Otago, the New Zealand Council for Educational Research and the Ministry of Education.

School of Thought: Students should take advantage of educational service groups

Throughout the semester, I’ve used my column to highlight shortcomings in American education. But as college students in a major city like Los Angeles, USC students are uniquely situated to make a real difference for the children attending school just blocks away from campus. So for my final column, I want to explore a few of the ways you can get involved on campus to help change students’ lives by improving their education at an early age.
