Five Science Fiction Movies We’re Looking Forward to in 2020

This entry was posted in Science Fiction on by .

Dystopian worlds are certainly a favorite of many people since they give rise to the great ‘what-if’ that seems to linger at the root of every question we ever ask. When the main character discovers a woman that seems to embody a way to drown out the mind-reading abilities that have become commonplace he and the woman go on the run and eventually discover the source of the Noise that grants such abilities. If anything this seems like a very generic plot that might be liberally draped with enough twists and turns to make it appealing and even entice viewers to come and see what it’s all about. It could also, possibly, be one of those that gets a nod as one of the smarter movies of the year.

Many things are taking place:

Avatar 2: A History Of All The Delays So Far

By December of this year, James Cameron’s intergalactic blockbuster (nay, block disintegrator) Avatar will turn 10 years old. One would assume that, with Hollywood’s sequel churning machine usually at breakneck speed, the highest grossing film of all time (for now) would have already brought in an Avatar 2, 3, or even 4 and 5 by now.

Well, James Cameron assures us that those four (count ’em, FOUR) subsequent tales exploring the unseen areas of Pandora are on their way. When should we expect Avatar 2, you ask? Who knows anymore? Not even Cameron.

In yet another chapter of Avatar 2’s seemingly unending development hell, as of this week, the release date has been pushed back once again. We know what you’re thinking: is that six delays or only five? Well, to be honest in all the excitement, we’ve kind of lost track ourselves.

Pretty Woman: On the Allure of Androids

In stretching ahead and behind us and sideways, science fiction allows us to problem-solve. Twelve or twenty years from now, the primal impulse in us hums, there should be a way to render our most primordial fears obsolete. It is telling, then, that so many of our most popular stories involve synthetic women, and that those stories pivot on the notion of those women gaining agency.

* * *

In Alex Garland’s film Ex Machina, beauty is an essential part of the synthetic woman’s design. Her purpose is to escape. We are led to believe that said desire in Ava was self-generated, that any thing’animal, human or robot’would automatically, naturally, resist enclosure. But the very point of the experiment is to see what she will do to escape. She was designed, in fact, for the purpose of actualizing her desire to break free. It is not her goal, but her creator’s. In every way, she is made to mimic us. The film was released in 2015 to critical acclaim, almost a century and a half after the Symbolist novel that gave us our earliest usage of the term android. Our protagonist’s name does not even attempt to mask her genealogy.
