[ First James Webb Space Telescope General Observer Scientific Programs Selected ]

The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope will be the world’s premier space science observatory when it launches later this year. Webb will solve mysteries about our Solar System, look at distant worlds around other stars, and probe the mysterious structures and origins of our Universe. Webb is an international program led by NASA with its partners, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).

Mission officials for Webb have announced the selection of the General Observer programs for the telescope’s first year, known as Cycle 1. These specific programs will provide the astronomical community worldwide with their first extensive opportunity to investigate scientific targets with Webb. The selected proposals address a wide variety of science areas and will help fulfill ESA’s overarching mission to further our understanding of the Universe and our place in it.

Kepler’s Children: Meet The Scientists Searching for Other Earths

Dave Latham had to be talked into making the discovery for which he’s probably best known. One Friday afternoon in September 1984, Israeli astronomer Tsevi Mazeh, whom he’d never met, paid a visit to his office at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Mazeh had an idea: Use the Center’s ‘digital speedometer’an instrument that measured the motions of distant stars by recording Doppler shifts in their spectra’to look for slight wobbles caused by the tug of Jupiter-size planets. Latham objected that his instrument wasn’t nearly sensitive enough. It could measure these radial velocities down to a few hundred meters per second, but Jupiter’s tugging effect on our sun, for example, is just 12 meters per second. What if the planet were much closer to its star, Mazeh wondered. Big planets don’t orbit that close, answered Latham, citing then-current theory about how planets formed. Don’t always be bound by what the theorists say, countered Mazeh.

Ball Aerospace Completes Critical Design Review of Roman Space Telescope Instrument

BROOMFIELD, Colo., March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Ball Aerospace, partnered with NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, successfully completed the critical design review of the Wide Field Instrument (WFI), which will be the primary science instrument on NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, formerly known as the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST).

“Now that we have passed this critical milestone, we will continue to work hand-in-hand with NASA as we move from the design phase and into building and integrating the instrument,” said Dr. Makenzie Lystrup, vice president and general manager, Civil Space, Ball Aerospace. “It’s always exciting to get to the hardware build, and particularly in this case as WFI is the central science instrument on Roman.”
