Column: What’s the deal with UFOs, anyway? | Columnists | hickoryrecord.com

Like most kids of the 1960s, I grew up musing about unidentified flying objects. I read sci-fi books, watched the night sky for Sputnik and marveled at meteors. What if a spaceship landed with strange beings like the ones on ‘The Outer Limits’ or ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’?

Project Blue Book ‘ the government program, not the TV show ‘ collected information about sightings across the nation. Over the course of 20 years, thousands of incidents were reported and analyzed, but in the end, the Air Force claimed unequivocally that nothing reported to them was extraterrestrial or a threat to our national security. Furthermore, there was no evidence of technology beyond the range of modern scientific knowledge.

Experts weigh in on UFO debate ahead of Pentagon report

That’s exactly what we won’t find out when the Pentagon’s anxiously-awaited UFO report finally lands in coming days.

Because it is likely that the report’s conclusion will be inconclusive, the Daily News asked scientists, astronomers, astrophysicists, former fighter pilots and former heads of the U.S. Space Command and Los Alamos National Lab what the heck the government knows ‘ and what they will likely keep from us.

What they don’t all agree on is why the government suddenly began releasing information. Some believe that our government is readying us for the big reveal. Others maintain that using a cover for what they’re really covering up is the real strategy.
