ExoMy Is A Miniature European Mars Rover With A Friendly Face

Over the past few weeks, a new season of Mars fever kicked off with launches of three interplanetary missions. And since there’s a sizable overlap between fans of spaceflight and those of electronics and 3D printing, the European Space Agency released the ExoMy rover for those who want to experience a little bit of Mars from home.

ExoMy’s smiling face and cartoonish proportions are an adaptation of ESA’s Rosalind Franklin (formerly the ExoMars) rover which, if 2020 hadn’t turned out to be 2020, would have been on its way to Mars as well. While Rosalind Franklin must wait for the next Mars launch window, we can launch ExoMy missions to our homes now. Like the real ESA rover, ExoMy has a triple bogie suspension design distinctly different from the rocker-bogie design used by NASA JPL’s rover family. Steering all six wheels rather than just four, ExoMy has maneuvering chops visible in a short Instagram video clip (also embedded after the break).

Chandrayaan 2 Orbiter Completes A Year Around The Moon & Still Has Enough Fuel For 7 More Years

The Indian space agency ISRO has confirmed that it’s been a year since Chandrayaan 2 has successfully been in the orbit around the moon.’

Yup, it’s reminders like these that make us realize that time is indeed flying. We can’t believe it’s already been a year since one of the most historic events for our country occurred.

ISRO has also confirmed that all instruments of Chandrayaan 2 are currently performing well and there is adequate onboard fuel to keep it operational in the orbit for 7 more years.’

For those of you who forgot about Chandrayaan 2, we’d like to point out that the mission was launched on July 22, 2019, and it entered the lunar orbit on August 20. This means it has officially completed a year in the orbit.You might remember that the Chandrayaan 2 mission did face a hiccup as it failed the soft-landing attempt. Yes, the lander carrying the rover couldn’t successfully land on the lunar surface, but the orbiter was successfully placed.The orbiter is also a crucial part of the mission as it carries eight scientific instruments. It has now completed more than 4,400 orbits around the moon and all the instruments are currently performing well.’
