Do scientists really think ‘Oumuamua is an alien spaceship?

Harvard professors suggest the cigar-shaped interstellar object that whizzed past the sun last year could be an alien probe. Pictured: Artist’s impression of the interstellar asteroid ‘Oumuamua. Image credit: European Southern Observatory

Appearance: Dark, reddish, about 400 metres long by 40 metres wide, so roughly the size and shape of a skyscraper.

You don’t know, do you? No. But ‘Oumuamua is generally mysterious. It was spotted last October whizzing past the sun, too fast to have originated in our solar system. It was declared the first interstellar object ever discovered, before disappearing from view in January.

While you’re here, how about this:

Fact Check, Ground reality: ‘Oumuamua: Asteroid, comet, or alien spaceship?

On October 19, 2017, astronomers operating the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) 1 instrument in Maui, Hawaii, noticed an unusual object bursting out of the constellation Lyra about 32 million km from Earth, and hurtling across the Solar System towards an unknown destination. It was too small to appear as more than just a point of light even on large telescopes, but it was evidently an unusually elongated object that was both rotating about an axis and tumbling along through space, given that its brightness varied dramatically every 7-8 hours ‘ brightest when its full length faced the Earth, near invisible when it pointed towards the Earth. It was going at more than 87 km/second ‘ fast enough to escape the gravity of the Sun. Scientists named it ‘Oumuamua, Hawaiian for ‘scout’ or ‘a messenger sent from far to reach out to us’, and concluded that the reddish-brown rock shaped like a cigar ‘ about 800 m long and 80 m wide; extreme proportions never observed before ‘ was the first interstellar object ever seen in the Solar System.

Oumuamua: Interstellar rock, or alien spaceship?

Well, figuratively speaking, that is. It’s already passed by earth and doesn’t seem to be circling back around any time soon. Unless the most recent theories have any merit, that is.

Let’s backup, though. Last year, astronomers in Hawaii noticed what appeared to be a weirdly shaped asteroid tumbling through the solar system. In fact, its cigar shape was so unnatural for an asteroid that they originally thought it was a comet, but a quick look at its behaviour shot that theory down pretty quickly.

But ‘Oumuamua also doesn’t behave like a typical asteroid. Aside from its cigar-shape, its surface also appears to be made of a carbon-based material, not the typical ice or rock found on other asteroids. To make matters weirder, it also seemed to speed up as it passed by the sun. This unusual behaviour lead to a very bizarre theory, published in a new paper by Harvard professors Shmuel Bialy and Abraham Loeb: ‘Oumuamua might be an alien spacecraft.

Do scientists really think ‘Oumuamua is an alien spaceship?

Cool. It was long and thin, unlike any asteroid or comet seen before. And its surface was carbon-based, not ice or rock. And ‘ get this ‘ after passing the sun, it suddenly sped up. So now some scientists are speculating ‘

I don’t want a range of theories. I want aliens. Settle down. Initially, the acceleration was put down to outgassing.

(Snigger.) When comets pass close to stars, they release gas that can speed them up. No gas was detected from ‘Oumuamua, but it might have been released quite gently.

That’s right. Designed by aliens. Of course, it was scanned last year for radio signals, and wasn’t sending any.

No, ‘Oumuamua Is Probably Not an Alien Spaceship

On October 19, 2017, a strange object from outside the Solar System whizzed by the Earth, exciting scientists and non-scientists alike. Immediately, some people speculated that this interstellar visitor could be an alien spacecraft. But we’re here to report that, despite a recent paper, there’s no reason to think ‘Oumuamua is an alien ship, yet.

A variety of news outlets have been reporting this week that Harvard scientists say the object might be an alien visitor. And in fact, the researchers did say that!’But there’s some nuance to dig into here.

* * *

On ‘Oumuamua’s arrival, scientists found that the object measured 800 meters by 80 meters by 80 meters (approximately a half mile long and 260 feet in diameter) and took a hyperbolic path through the Solar System. In other words, it wasn’t orbiting the Sun’its angle and speed suggested that it was visiting and then leaving.

This mysterious object could be an alien spaceship, says Harvard astronomer

You may have heard about Oumuamua, a mysterious object spotted traveling through space. It’s the first intersteller object spotted in our solar system, which would already be mysterious by itself. But the real mystery has to do with the object’s speed: it’s going 70,000 miles per hour, much faster than an asteroid should. In fact, when it slingshotted around the sun, it sped up.

‘There was something affecting its motion other than the gravitational forces of the Sun and planets,’ said Marco Micheli, a European Space Agency scientist, in a press statement.

Is Oumuamua an Alien Spaceship? The Stars of ‘Ancient Aliens’ Have a Theory

The Oumuamua debate might seem like a no-brainer for the crew of extraterrestrial experts that makes up Ancient Aliens. Think again.

When the cigar-shaped asteroid was first spotted passing through our solar system at above average speeds it quickly sparked speculation that Oumuamua might actually be some kind of alien probe. Then a Harvard professor published a paper giving those extraterrestrial theories a boost. Then Neil Degrasse Tyson weighed in.
