CGG: CGG Leads European Space Agency Plastic Pollution Innovation Study

A consortium led by CGG has been selected by the European Space Agency’s Space Solutions initiative to undertake a study aimed at developing new environmental monitoring technology and services to help combat the global marine litter crisis.

The first 12-month phase of the study will focus on establishing the technical feasibility and commercial viability of new satellite-based services for detecting large aggregations of floating plastics to improve understanding of the sources, pathways and trends of plastic pollution in marine and coastal environments. The study will capture the requirements of an independent group of end-users, with the objective of developing new fit-for-purpose solutions that could be implemented and demonstrated in a follow-on phase.

China’s Carbon Neutral Opportunity: Economic Growth Driven By Ambitious Climate Action

China energized international climate ambitions in 2020 by pledging to peak emissions before 2030 and reach carbon neutrality before 2060, building upon an earlier European Union commitment to do the same by 2050. President Biden’s election has sparked hope the United States will follow suit at the United Nations’ COP26 climate summit in November 2021. Climate ambition on the part of the world’s three largest economies could set a new global pace.

But new research shows the growing economic advantages of stronger climate policies could be a principal reason China chooses to increase its climate ambition. As clean energy becomes ever cheaper, the world’s top greenhouse gas emitter can export the very technologies it develops to decarbonize at home, driving innovation and improving the competitiveness of domestic companies in international clean energy markets. A recent study accounting for this macroeconomic dynamic found faster power sector decarbonization could increase China’s economic growth up to 15% by 2030.

Secretive Israeli nuclear facility undergoes major project

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ‘ A secretive Israeli nuclear facility at the center of the nation’s undeclared atomic weapons program is undergoing what appears to be its biggest construction project in decades, satellite photos analyzed by The Associated Press show.

A dig about the size of a soccer field and likely several stories deep now sits just meters (yards) from the aging reactor at the Shimon Peres Negev Nuclear Research Center near the city of Dimona. The facility is already home to decades-old underground laboratories that reprocess the reactor’s spent rods to obtain weapons-grade plutonium for Israel’s nuclear bomb program.

First, Krispy Kreme offered free donuts for people who get COVID vaccinations. Next up could be local governments handing out gift cards. Is that OK?
