This week, NASA is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), a sensitive spacecraft that has shown the world never-before-seen imagery of the sun.’

The mission launched on Feb. 11, 2010, and during the spacecraft’s first decade in orbit, it has viewed planets crossing in front of the sun, studied the activity of sun’s scorching outer atmosphere (known as the corona) and witnessed nearly an entire 11-year solar cycle.

Solar Orbiter blasts off to capture 1st look at sun’s poles

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. ‘ Europe and NASA’s Solar Orbiter rocketed into space Sunday night on an unprecedented mission to capture the first pictures of the sun’s elusive poles.

The $1.5 billion spacecraft will join NASA’s Parker Solar Probe, launched 1 1/2 years ago, in coming perilously close to the sun in order to unveil its secrets.

Solar Orbiter’s frontier mission: capture ‘symphony of the sun’

Armed with an innovative heat shield, the U.S.-Europe collaboration will boldly go where no spacecraft has gone before ‘ to photograph the sun’s poles.

“We’re on the way to the sun. Go Solar Orbiter!” said Cesar Garcia Marirrodriga, project manager for the European Space Agency. “It’s a fantastic moment … it’s like, well, we’re unstoppable.”

“Every instrument plays a different tune, but together they play the symphony of the sun,” Mr. Hasinger said.

Distant giant planets form differently than ‘failed stars’
