Marvel Movie Club: 4 things to remember about Doctor Strange
As we count down to the long-awaited uber-team-up’Avengers: Infinity War'(out April 27),’EW’s Marvel Movie Club‘is preparing by revisiting the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe in the weeks leading up to the mega-sized movie. EW’will look back at one Marvel movie a week, every week, to reassess its powers and hopefully answer important questions along the way like ‘What was’The Incredible Hulk?’ ‘Does Nick Fury wash his eye-patch?’ and ‘Is there a point to Hawkeye?’ This week, we look back at Doctor Strange’a.k.a.’Dr. House Becomes a Magician.
Whenever a new Marvel movie comes out, I usually spend at least the next two weeks thinking about talking about it, whether or not I liked it. However, the opposite happened with Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange, which didn’t leave an impression on me for one important reason: The 2016 presidential election. Doctor Strange opened Nov. 4, and the election changed the world four days later on Nov. 8. Basically, everything became irrelevant after that, and I really haven’t given much thought to’Doctor Strange since then.’And I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case for many people who haven’t had a chance to revisit it since it hit theaters. So, to help prepare you for’Avengers: Infinity War, which is the next time we’ll see Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, I’ve pulled out the four most important things to remember from the movie.
Doctor Strange follows Stephen Strange, a genius neurosurgeon whose illustrious career comes to a heartbreaking (for him) end after his hands are damaged beyond repair in a car accident. Desperate to practice medicine again, Stephen goes on a spiritual journey that takes him to the doorstep of the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), who ends up teaching him that there are more important things in the world than his hands ‘ specifically magic and the people trying to use it to bring an evil demon into our world. So he begins learning about the mystical arts and by the end of the movie, he becomes Earth’s main defender against interdimensional threats.
It’s fairly obvious that’Doctor Strange tells a very similar story to 2008’s’Iron Man, which is about narcissistic and sarcastic weapons manufacturer Tony Stark going on his own rebirth cycle that ends with him abandoning his old ways and becoming a superhero. Sure,’Iron Man didn’t invent the cocky genius-to-hero arc and’Doctor Strange won’t be the last to tell such a story, but the former at least made it feel fresh and fun, and here it feels kind of tired. Part of the problem is that Benedict Cumberbatch isn’t as charming as Robert Downey Jr., no matter how many pop culture references you make him say in his very funny American accent. His surly take on Strange is good, but he’s far from as inherently affable as other Marvel heroes who have experienced similar rebirth arcs.
The closer we get to’Avengers: Infinity War, the more we’ll have to start talking about those pesky Infinity Stones. In case you forgot, Infinity Stones are those glowing balls of light that Thanos (Josh Brolin) is after. We’ve already encountered the Space Stone (the Tesseract), the Mind Stone (Vision’s forehead accessory), the Reality Stone (a.k.a. the Aether in’Thor: The Dark World), and the Power Stone (in’Guardians of the Galaxy). Now,’Doctor Strange introduced us to the fifth stone, the Time Stone, which is encased in the Eye of Agamotto and grants Strange the ability to manipulate time and helps him stop Kaecelius and his merry band of fanatics in Hong Kong. At the end of the movie, he returned the Eye to Kamar-Taj. After’Doctor Strange, there’s only one gem we haven’t seen yet: the Soul Stone.

Everything you need to know about Doctor Strange (and friends) before Avengers: Infinity War
SYFY WIRE’s Infinity War Roundup is your go-to guide for everything you need to know about Marvel’s massive superhero crossover, Avengers: Infinity War. In the weeks leading up to Infinity War’s April 27th premiere, SYFY WIRE will be rounding up every important character arc and plot detail you need to know from the past 10 years and 18 movies.
Today’s entry will take a look at the main characters from the films that feature the master of the mystic arts ‘ Doctor Strange.
Compared to some of the other Avengers, Doctor Strange is a fairly recent addition. After all, he’s only gotten one solo movie so far, his eponymous origin story in 2016. Stephen Strange’s journey to magical superhero began with his job as a talented neurosurgeon. Smart, egotistical, and selfish, Strange’s own hubris led to a devastating car accident that cost him the use of his expert hands. No longer to perform surgeries and unable to find a cure to stop his shaking appendages, the desperate Strange puts his last hope in Jonathan Pangborn (Benjamin Bratt), a paraplegic who somehow regained the use of his limbs.
When the three main Sanctum Sanctorums in New York, London, and Hong Kong are attacked by the rogue sorcerer Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen) and the Ancient One is mortally wounded, it’s up to Strange, still a novice, to save the world from becoming absorbed into a world of pure evil. By coming to “bargain” with Dormammu over and over again, he saves the planet while also getting rid of Kaecilius and his followers. Once that’s over with, Strange, greatly humbled by the experience, settles into his new life as a Sorcerer Supreme and the head of the New York Sanctum in Greenwich Village.
The good doctor resurfaces for the second time in Thor: Ragnarok when Thor (Chris Hemsworth) comes looking for his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) on Earth. Strange has a little fun with the god of thunder (providing him with an endless stein of beer) and his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) before sending them on the their merry way.

Since we’re TWO weeks away from Infinity War, I thought I would write TWO sentence synopses of each film as a refresher (or rather for those who don’t want to invest the time to see every previous movie).
Demonbane destroys countless buildings by kicking Doctor West's Destroyer Robot.
At the start of their battle, Demonbane and Liber Legis destroy probably a universe through their own power.
Using their shining trapezohedrons, Demonbane and Liber Legis destroy a hundred billion universes.
But due to Klein Bottle cosmology these "universes" are all actually infinite multiverses.
After falling high from the sky, Demonbane activates its anti-shock defenses. The impact tossed several buildings into the air like leaves.
Survives Therion's gravity field which flattens buildings.
Takes a direct attack from the island shaking Dagon.
Survives in another one of Therion's gravity fields but following this, one is "infinitely more powerful."
Through their battle across the infinite multiverse, Demonbane and Liber Legis end up wiping out the dinosaurs with a blast 10,000x greater than all of the nuclear weapons of the world.
Evades Lord Byakhee who was surely moving at the speed of sound.
Demonbane's flight speed would kill a normal person from the Gs.
Demonbane's maneuverability has transcended the concept of physics.
Demonbane's Lemuria Impact has the power to destroy Arkham City if it was failed to be controlled.
Said BoS Lemuria still turned a sector of Arkham into a crater while becoming controlled.
While not explicitly stated in the first game, The Lemuria Impact has not only infinite heat but whether also infinite gravity.
Doctor West's upgraded robot destroys itself on Demonbane's Elder Sign, a magical pentagram shield. West's prior robots as happens were already multi-building level.
Atlach-Nacha is a spell that creates webs from Demonbane's head. Early game these can restrain West's multi-ton robot.
After obtaining one of Al Azif's pages, Demonbane can use Cthugha a blast of incredibly powerful and hot fire.
While concentrating, Kurou and Al push Cthugha and Ithaqua's powers to perchace new heights as their pressure both passes 38,000x on the barometer.
Ithaqua prior to joining Kurou and Al (and thus weaker) was freezing the entire city of Arkham.
In their God-Beast Forms they are capable of wiping out one third of 100,000
Demonbane can create black holes that also possibly lead to the dimension of the Shining Trapezahedron.
Lemuria Impact one shots an infinite horde of monsters that eclipse the sun.
Demonbane can teleport to/with it's pilots wherever they want thanks to
Demonbane's heart, the silver key, Cor Leonis draws infinite energy from infinite universes.
Demonbane's Shinguards allow him to warp space and time
and one of his strongest attacks the Atlantis Strike which pours out dimension warping space-time altering energy.
After obtaining one of Al Azif's many lost pages, Demonbane obtains the ability to use the Mirror of Nitocris
which thins the boundary between reality and fantasy.
And the absolute peak of Zanma Demonbane's feats, it absorbs Not only Demonbane's Shining Trapezohedron but Liber Legis' as well.
In the opening page of the novel, Demonbane uses Atlantis Strike which shakes a galaxy. He then proceeds to spam this against Liber Legis, to no avail.
When it is summoned, Demonbane destroys a Dimension and was 10x stronger and larger than the original.
Demonbane's most infamous scan. After evolving he and Liber Legis fought across the Macrocosm, destroying infinite multiverses in their wake.
Takes a kick from Liber Legis which is equal to Demonbane's galaxy shaking Atlantis Strike then regenerates the damage done.
This version of the Lemuria Impact also used the Heart of Infinity to increase it's power. The HOI in it's first release could create infinite universes.
Rewinds time on a planetary scale casually using De Marigny’s Clock.
In it's final evolution, Mars Demonbane uses Athleta Aeternum and ascends to the "Super Super Space-Time continuum" where they look out across the multiverse.
With two magic guns, Demonbane shoots down 18 gravity balls which are composed of super dense gravity.
Much like Zanma Demonbane can, Mars Demonbane can summon Cthugha and Ithaqua in the form of bullets to shoot.
In one of Demonbane's only feats he uses the Athleta Aeternum. A technique which allows the Deus Machina to summon infinite copies of itself from endless possibilities, impossibilities, and those beyond possibility itself.
