Rare Drawings From ‘Museum Of Weird,’ Walt Disney’s Vision For Haunted Mansion Go To Auction

“Walt gathered everyone in for a meeting and went on to explain his idea for the “Museum of the Weird.” “He had the idea that the backstory for the attraction was that the fictitious owner of the “Mansion” had traveled all over the world and collected the weirdest and strangest things he could find. He then brought them to the “museum”. “Guests would have to exit through the museum on the way out of the attraction.” said Rolly Crump, the creator of the concept drawings and one of Walt's original Imagineers. “I thought that was a great idea, and as Walt was leaving he turned to me and said “God, I'm really looking forward to the Museum of the Weird!”

These rare and original concept drawings have never been offered at auction before and a photo of Walt Disney viewing the drawings is included. The story of the “Museum of the Weird” is an unusual Disney story and one that has not been fully explored, until now.

Other rare highlights added to the highly anticipated auction include the original “It's a Small World” façade model complete with images of Walt Disney holding a section of the model. Imagineer Rolly Crump used these models to create the attraction building for Disneyland (Estimate: $15,000-$20,000) Original concept drawings that Crump showed to Walt Disney in 1963 for his approval for the pre-show area of the attraction are being offered as well as clothing, props like a “Tangaroa Baby Prop” and “Fountain Shield” and hundreds of other items significant to Disneyland history. Overall, there are 12 original concept drawings from various attractions by Rolly Crump included in the over 400 lot auction.<

Van Eaton Galleries Announces the Collection of Disney Imagineer Rolly Crump

Los Angeles, California – Van Eaton Galleries, one of the world’s premier animation artwork and collectibles galleries, has announced “The Life and Career of Disney Legend Rolly Crump” an Exhibition and Auction to be held Saturday, April 28, 2018 beginning at 11:00 a.m. PDT at Van Eaton Galleries located at 13613 Ventura Blvd in Sherman Oaks, California.’

One of Walt Disney’s early Imagineers, Rolly Crump is known as a “true” original. He joined The Walt Disney Studios in 1952 where he quickly became one of the most multi-talented artists on Walt’s team. In 1959, he joined show design at WED Enterprises, later known as Walt Disney Imagineering. It was there that he became one of Walt’s key designers for some of Disney’s groundbreaking new attractions and entertainment, including the Haunted Mansion, the Enchanted Tiki Room and the Adventureland Bazaar.

Rolly also served as a key designer on the Disney attractions featured at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair, including It’s a Small World and the Tower of the Four Winds. When the It’s a Small World attraction moved to Disneyland in 1966, Rolly designed the larger-than-life animated clock at its entrance, which sends the children of the world on a parade each quarter-hour.

Rolly would go on to contribute to the initial design of the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Florida, where he would improve upon such popular attractions as Peter Pan’s Flight, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, and Snow White’s Scary Adventures for the new Florida Park. Rolly aided in the master planning of EPCOT Center, and would serve as project designer for The Land and Wonders of Life pavilions prior to the 1981 opening.

He departed from Disney in 1981 to lead design on a proposed Cousteau Ocean Center Park in Norfolk, Virginia, and to launch his own firm, the Mariposa Design Group. Rolly would develop an array of themed projects around the world, including work for Barnum and Bailey’s Circus World, Knott’s Berry Farm, and the Golden Nugget Casino.
