[ Sadiq Khan: ‘I never wanted to be a culture war poster boy’ ]

In five years as the mayor of the UK’s largest city, Sadiq Khan has overseen the most challenging period in London for more than in half a century.

David Furness, the candidate for the far-right Britain First party, turned his back on the mayor as he made his victory speech.

“I’m not interested in a culture war or any wars. That’s not the job I applied for. That’s not what I stood for.”

Raised in a council house in south London, the 50-year-old Mr Khan admits he is not one to shy away from a fight.

“And that means sometimes taking on the prime minister and, in my view, having to take on the president of the USA.”

Amid unease on the left, Starmer aims to ‘bring Labour home’

A year on from landing the party’s top job, the leader plans on taking his message directly to the voters

* * *

Keir Starmer plans to spend the summer months criss-crossing the country to make his pitch directly to voters at scores of town hall-style meetings, in an attempt to ‘bring Labour home’ to its traditional supporters.

* * *

They also compare the plan to Emmanuel Macron’s grand d’bat meetings, as the French president sought to quell the discontent that drove the gilets jaunes (yellow vests) protests of 2019.

As his leadership enters a new phase, after 12 months that began with an acceptance speech he had to deliver to a camera in his own home instead of a cheering crowd, Starmer will be closely scrutinised not only by the voters, but by his own party.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan will set up review to consider decriminalising cannabis if he is re

Sadiq Khan will launch a review to examine the possibility of decriminalising cannabis if he is re-elected as Mayor of London on May 6.

The former Tooting MP is planning to set up an independent London Drugs Commission which will investigate the potential health, economic and criminal justice benefits of decriminalising the Class B drug.

Although he has ruled out decriminalising Class A drugs such as heroin and cocaine, Mr Khan is said to be willing to consider supporting changes to the legal status of cannabis if that is what the commission concludes.

Gen Z YouTubers Max Fosh, 26, and Niko Omilana, 23, have both taken to their social media followings to up the hype around their mayoral bids – Omilana has been increasing his video stunts to boost publicity for his so-called Niko Defence League movement, and Fosh’s version of a battle bus is a small red Volkswagen emblazoned with a QR code to his campaign video. The rivalry is already taking to the roads – last week Fosh posted a video of his car pulled up next to Fox’s big red battle bus emblazoned with an image of a gagged Winston Churchill.
