A key thing that has limited our understanding here is that we’ve never gotten a sense of what the ancestors of complex cells looked like. Over the last several years, we’ve found increasing genetic evidence of the existence of modern descendants of these organisms, but we’ve never been able to grow them to have a look at them. On Tuesday, however, a paper reports on the success of a decade-long attempt to get one of these to survive in culture. Research shows that individual cells have 'clocks' this happens is something of a mystery, but new research from the University of Georgia sheds light on this question, with a team led by Jonathan Arnold providing evidence for the first time that individual cells have clocks. And the resulting microbes look very weird’but weird in a way that hints at how complex cells evolved.

Wind-down of stem-cell institute leaves a void

For the past dozen or so years, stem-cell researchers in California have been the envy of the world. In 2004, as a rebuke to the restrictions put in place in the United States by then-president George W. Bush on funding for human embryonic stem-cell research, Californians approved US$3 billion in taxpayer funds to support regenerative medicine. That essentially guaranteed that the state would become the centre of innovation in the field.

Since then, almost all of my research funding has come from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM). But not for much longer.
