NASA’s Webb space telescope arrives in French Guiana after sea voyage

Once operational, Webb will reveal insights about all phases of cosmic history’back to just after the big bang’and will help search for signs of potential habitability among the thousands of exoplanets scientists have discovered in recent years. The mission is an international collaboration led by NASA, in partnership with the European and Canadian space agencies.

“The James Webb Space Telescope is a colossal achievement, built to transform our view of the universe and deliver amazing science,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. “Webb will look back over 13 billion years to the light created just after the big bang, with the power to show humanity the farthest reaches of space that we have ever seen. We are now very close to unlocking mysteries of the cosmos, thanks to the skills and expertise of our phenomenal team.”

NASA’s massive next-generation space telescope arrives in South America ahead of launch

After more than two decades of delays and ballooning development costs, NASA’s next-generation space observatory, the James Webb Space Telescope, has arrived in French Guiana, South America ‘ the site of the spacecraft’s planned launch later this year. Its arrival sparks the beginning of weeks of final preparations before the telescope is loaded on the top of its rocket for flight.

The James Webb Space Telescope, or JWST, spent 16 days at sea, packed inside an environmentally controlled, custom-built shipping container aboard a French cargo ship. The vessel transported the spacecraft from Redondo Beach, California, the site of the telescope’s primary contractor, Northrup Grumman. JWST had been at Northrop since early 2018, where it was undergoing final assembly and testing.

James Webb super-telescope arrives at launch site

Engineers at Europe’s Kourou spaceport will spend the coming weeks undertaking a series of final checks before mating the new telescope to its rocket.

The hope is it will detect the light even from the very first population of stars to switch on more than 13.5 billion years ago.

It is an extraordinary machine that will unfurl the biggest astronomical mirror ever sent into orbit – at 6.5m (21ft) in diameter.

All three agencies have contributed instrumentation, with Nasa and its industrial partner, Northrop Grumman, leading the observatory’s assembly.

After two decades, the Webb telescope is finished and on the way to its launch site

A ship carrying the $10 billion James Webb Space Telescope left a port in Southern California last weekend to begin a nearly two-week journey to Kourou, French Guiana, where it will begin final preparations for launch Dec. 18 on a European Ariane 5 rocket.

‘The James Webb Space Telescope is finished,’ said Paul Hertz, head of NASA’s astrophysics division, in a presentation to the Astronomy and Astrophysics Advisory Committee earlier this week. ‘We’ve stopped working on it. It’s on the way to the launch pad for a launch on Dec. 18.’

Eric Smith, NASA’s program scientist for the Webb telescope, confirmed Wednesday the observatory has departed the United States after completing final testing at a Northrop Grumman facility in Redondo Beach, California.

James Webb: Hubble successor given mid

Yes, countless targeted lift-offs have come and gone in the past, but this one has a reality to it that the others didn’t: the successor observatory to Hubble is now actually built.

All that is required is to ship the finished telescope to French Guiana, put it on the top of an Ariane rocket, light the engines and stand well back.

“It’s fantastic for everybody; it’s a real boost for all those that have worked on the project,” said Prof Gillian Wright, the senior UK scientist on Webb who co-leads one of the telescope’s four instrument packages.

JWST is a cooperative venture between the US, Europe and Canada. Their respective space agencies jointly announced the launch date on Wednesday.
