NASA’s next science missions will head for Venus, Io, or Triton

NASA just gave four teams $3 million each to bring their Solar System exploration dreams closer to reality. Two of the scientific teams have their sights set on Venus, one is focused on Jupiter’s highly volcanic moon Io, and the last is targeting Triton, a moon of Neptune.

‘These selected missions have the potential to transform our understanding of some of the solar system’s most active and complex worlds,’ Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, said in a press release. ‘Exploring any one of these celestial bodies will help unlock the secrets of how it, and others like it, came to be in the cosmos.’

NASA mission finalists would explore Venus or outer-planet moons

Venus may be Earth’s closest cousin, but for many planetary scientists, it can seem a distant dream. It’s been nearly 30 years since a NASA spacecraft has visited the planet. But that could change, as missions to Venus are two of the four finalists for the agency’s next two $500 million planetary missions, NASA announced today.

The Venus finalists have been here before: Versions of both proposals were in the same position in 2017, but NASA ultimately selected two missions to asteroids instead. This time, the Venus missions will face stiff competition from proposals to visit Io, Jupiter’s large volcanic moon, and Triton, Neptune’s icy moon, neither of which has been closely explored. Each proposal receives $3 million to flesh out their concept over the next year. After that, NASA plans to select two for flight. None would likely launch until the middle of this decade at the earliest.

NASA’s Next Low-Cost Planetary Science Missions Will Visit Venus or the Outer Solar System

NASA is set to handle some unfinished business across the solar system, as evidenced by four possible missions it announced yesterday. They are the finalists in the space agency’s Discovery Program competition, a Shark Tank’like face-off in which labs and universities have proposed small, focused spacecraft to explore disparate worlds. More than a dozen ideas, each designed to cost less than $500 million, were submitted to NASA for consideration. Of the four now remaining, only two or perhaps just one will be chosen next year for eventual flight.

Two of the mission finalists’DAVINCI+ and VERITAS’target Venus for further study. If either was used, it would mark a belated return by NASA to Earth’s troubled next-door neighbor. The agency has not launched a dedicated Venus spacecraft since 1989’a painful delay for a generation of scientists keen to explore the world as methodically as we have investigated Mars. With the discovery of extrasolar planets across the galaxy, ‘comparative planetology’ has become an urgent field of study: How is it that two extremely similar planets can evolve so very differently?
