NASA employee starts GoFundMe for hurting federal workers

Johanna Petrocelli, who has worked at the Houston center since 2014, started her GoFundMe page Monday. She had raised $1,302 as of Thursday morning, surpassing her goal of $1,000.

“I’m a federal employee in Houston, TX and I just want to help my fellow community,” Petrocelli wrote. “So I set up this GoFundMe as a means to help anyone (affected) by the furlough pay specifically for medical/child care/animal care bills.”

Petrocelli’s online fundraising comes as the federal government shutdown approaches the three-week mark.’Just 200 of the 3,055 federal employees at Johnson are still working — primarily to keep the three astronauts aboard the space station alive — because of the shutdown that started Dec. 22.

As President Donald Trump holds firm on his demand that Congress fund a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico, about 16,700 space agency personnel ‘ or 96 percent of the workforce ‘ across the nation are impacted.

Petrocelli was not available for comment Thursday, but her GoFundMe page states that she will provide money to federal workers who contact her for help.

“My plan is to withdraw the funds once we reach the goal and transfer it to every federal employee who reaches out to this campaign requesting a need for money (pending confirmation of the federal employee/contractor status),” she wrote.

OGDEN, Utah ‘ The snowy streets of Ogden are quiet these days. Parking lots are half-empty. Restaurant sales have dropped. Without federal workers to serve, Bickering Sisters cafe has cut the hours of its lunch service.

More than 4,000 federal employees who work for the Internal Revenue Service and U.S. Forest Service have been furloughed from their jobs in this outdoorsy haven north of Salt Lake City as part of the partial government shutdown. The closing of federal offices has reverberated across the city of 87,000, where roughly a third of annual revenue comes from the sales tax.

So as the partial government shutdown stretched into its sixth day with no end in sight, James, a minimum-wage contractor sidelined from his job as an office worker at the Interior Department, was worried.

‘I live check-to-check right now,’ he said, and he risks missing his rent or phone payment. Contractors, unlike most federal employees, may never get back pay for being idled. ‘I’m getting nervous,’ he said.

A California Dream for Paid Leave Has an Old Problem: How to Pay for It

The United States has long been the only industrialized country not to offer paid leave to new parents. Instead of waiting for the federal government, the incoming governor of California intends to change that in a significant way for families in his state.

He is expected to introduce a proposal to give families six months of paid leave after the birth of a child.

California’s proposal continues an effort by governors to pass laws on the issue while Congress is gridlocked. Massachusetts, Washington and New Jersey recently passed or expanded paid family leave policies. Advocates say Oregon, Colorado and Connecticut are poised to do so, too. In competitive races in the recent midterm elections, 29 percent of candidates for Congress and governor included paid leave in their platforms, up from 4 percent four years earlier, according to the National Partnership for Women and Families.
