Trailer: ‘Ocean’s 8’ To Be Summer’s Least Surprising Surprise Hit

You can speculate to your heart’s content, but if we’re going to start judging word-of-mouth for major releases based on opt-in online polling, especially sites that don’t require voters to have seen the movie (The Last Jedi received an A from CinemaScore), then I think we also have to be honest about the… curve that exists for big flicks that star men and women of color and white women in prime starring roles. So, it will be fun seeing how badly this second trailer is "downvoted" by folks appalled at the mere idea of a female-led spin-off of the Ocean’s 11 franchise. The good news is that, presuming the movie is any good (or at least not that bad), it has the potential to be a glorified event movie for adult women.

Yes, there has been a decent helping of female-led entertainment in the first third of the year, with Proud Mary, Tomb Raider, Fifty Shades Freed and A Wrinkle in Time arguably serving various ages alongside the wide-release Oscar pictures (Shape of Water, Lady Bird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri among others). However, we’re about to head into a more testosterone-driven summer season.  While there is no shortage (relatively speaking) of female-led entertainment this summer (and that’s assuming that Ant-Man and the Wasp and  Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom don’t fit the bill, which they might) Ocean’s 8 by virtue of its cast and its concept has the potential to be a glorified "event movie" for women too old for superheroes or YA fantasy flicks.

Heck, if The Heat could earned $229 million worldwide back in June of 2013 just by having Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, well, (changing theatrical landscape aside), Ocean’s 8 (which stars Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna and Helena Bonham Carter) is setting itself as a glorified Avengers (or maybe Expendables 2) for adult women. To be fair, the $7om-ish Gary Ross-directed heist flick doesn’t have to make a mint to be a hit, and summer 2013 was a barren desert for female-led multiplex fare. But this is another strong example, by virtue of its cast and its core concept, of an IP revamp that isn’t depending on the popularity of the franchise in order to make it appealing.

Yes, the IP helps create awareness, but a quirky heist caper with this cast would be a big deal no matter what it was called. The social buzz on this is going to be huge, all of stars will be all over the magazine/talk show circuit and I’d be shocked if this doesn’t become a de-facto "ladies night" event flick at least on the scale of Bad Moms or Girls Trip. No, it won’t necessarily challenge Infinity War for the summer crown, but Ocean’s 8 could easily be the summer’s least surprising surprise hit. We’ll find out on June 8.  Just watch out for those user ratings and YouTube downvotes!
