Vassalboro couple loses mobile home to fire of unknown cause

VASSALBORO ‘ A couple in their 70s is homeless after fire tore through their rented mobile home Thursday off Route 32 in Vassalboro, destroying the home and all their belongings.

Ron and Sandra Goguen’s 5-week-old kitten is believed to have perished in the fire, according to those who tried to rescue it.

The Goguens were out delivering Meals on Wheels on Thursday morning when they got a call from a neighbor, Dennis Wright, asking if they were together and notifying them that their home was on fire.

Wright and two other neighbors, Arnold Pelletier and David Jackson, had tried to break down the mobile home’s door after Pelletier noticed smoke coming from a vent at the peak of the roof and called 911 around 10:15 a.m.

The Goguens’ mobile home is in China Lake Park on Bradstreet Road, just off Route 32 near Ron’s Auto Parts Inc. It is about 2 miles from downtown North Vassalboro and the Olde Mill Place.

Quite a lot has been going on:

6 months after the wildfires: Flames extinguished, but North Bay’s scars aren’t healing

Susan Gorin aches to fast-forward to well past next year — when she once again has a home on what is now an ashy lot.

Peter Alan wants to turn the rubble of his Craftsman art studio into something meaningful. Lisa Mast longs to look out her window and see something across the street besides blackened reminders of the flames that swept through before sunrise Oct. 9.

That was the night, six months ago, when hot Diablo winds blasted across the hills from the east, snatched up some sparks and rained fear and sorrow on the North Bay.

Sonoma County took the brunt of it, and its biggest city, Santa Rosa, suffered most of all. Gorin’s lot and thousands of others are still empty. Tens of thousands of people — the county has not tracked exact numbers — were displaced by the fires, and many of them remain in rentals, emergency housing and government trailers. Homeless camps with hundreds of people mark the southern city limits of Santa Rosa.

“I have never experienced a disaster quite like this,” said Gorin, a Sonoma County supervisor. “The seven stages of grief are very much evident here. This will be with us for a long, long time.”

This Man Has Already Lost 10 Pounds From Playing Skyrim VR

Skyrim VR just came out a little over a week ago for PC (our full review) and one dedicated player (elliotttate on Reddit) has already used it to lose 10 pounds. In case this isn’t obvious: that’s extremely rapid weight loss.

The player accomplished this by enforcing rules upon himself that both increase the game’s immersion and force him to be as mobile and active as possible. Skyrim VR on PC already supports motion controllers and standing up while you play, but there’s currently a bug that restrict’s the player’s hitbox in place even if you physically move around your room. One of his rules was to ignore that bug and attempt to physical dodge arrows and spells just by moving around his environment.

He also read all of his character’s dialogue out loud and never rode a horse or fast-traveled at all while playing. That’s right: he ran everywhere.

By simply walking, jogging, and sprinting in place at whatever speed his character was moving, he was able to not only simulate the feeling that he was actually there, but was able to work up quite a sweat as well.

“In my room-scale room, I laid down a couple yoga mats, strapped on my running shoes, blasted a fan on me at full blast and learned to run in place to the exact speed of the game movement speed,” he writes. “I also learned to sprint really fast at the exact speed of the sprint that uses stamina in the game (which you don’t realize is fast until you have to physically run that speed). At first, I just chose a direction and decided to do a 30 minute run. With all the mods loaded, the beauty of running through the cobblestone streets at night, with lanterns swaying to the side and a thousand stars in the sky was purely magical – breath taking!”
