Something Very Weird Is Happening in Trumpland Regarding Syria

Donald Trump fancies himself a decisive leader. On the campaign trail he said he would never “telegraph” his military strategy, but early Wednesday morning, he appeared to do just that:

Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria. Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and ‘smart!’ You shouldn’t be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!

Now, just a day later, the president seems to have sharply reversed course, returning to Twitter in an effort to make his missile threat much less decisive sounding.

Never said when an attack on Syria would take place. Could be very soon or not so soon at all! In any event, the United States, under my Administration, has done a great job of ridding the region of ISIS. Where is our ‘Thank you America?’

So Trump now appears to be denying that in Wednesday’s tweet he blurted out too much about his strategy for responding to the recent chemical weapons attacks in Syria.

Not to change the topic here:

Something very weird is happening to Doge memes in 2018

The joke was just a description of the dog in the photo, jazzed up with intentional misspellings and idiosyncratic word choices. Instead of saying “He’s a plant,” for example, we get “so plent.” This was funny at first, but you can see how Doge-speak would wear thin after a year of constant repetition.

In early March, a poster on Reddit’s “out of the loop” subreddit asked, “Where are all these new doge memes coming from?”’To illustrate his point, he included a gallery of 50 very weird memes starring the Shiba Inu.

In these pics, the original Doge has been warped and melted into terrifying new shapes using Photoshop’s liquify tool. Once, the dog was cute. Now we have “le spider”:

Gratuitous use of the French “le” is an internet culture relic older than Doge itself. It dates back to 2003, and featured prominently in the oughties trend of “rage comics” memes, which were especially popular on Reddit. Like bringing back Doge, we can presume that bringing back “le” is meant to be ironic.

But, circling back to our “out of the loop” Redditor’s question: Where did these weird, re-shaped “le doge” memes come from?

‘Weird Al’ abandons spectacle for ‘intimate’ new tour

CHICAGO, April 12 (UPI) — Gone are the elaborate costumes, the wacky props and the giant projection screen. Also absent are the famous — sometimes infamous — parody songs.

“I just wanted to do something different, because I’ve been doing the same kind of show for three decades, and every single time we go out on the road we try to make it bigger and better than the time before,” veteran performer “Weird Al” Yankovic told UPI of his ongoing Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour.

“I wanted to do something completely different, so we went the whole other direction and decided to make it as bare-bones a tour as possible,” Yankovic said. “So it’s literally just me and the guys in the band walking out on stage and playing music.”

The 58-year-old comedic songwriter, who has been recording and touring with his band for three decades, said the Vanity Tour, which is nearing the midpoint of its 77-city engagement, serves two main purposes: providing a more intimate musical experience for the audience and highlighting the original songs that often go overlooked in his catalog.

“I want it small and intimate, I want to feel like I’m playing somebody’s living room, essentially,” Yankovic said. “The intimate vibe was always what I had in mind and it feels great, I really enjoy doing these shows. It feels like I’m just hanging out with people.”
