One ‘Strange’ Instagram Live: Will Smith Has a Few Quirky Questions for a Space Station Astronaut

Will Smith called an astronaut at the International Space Station Thursday (April 12) in the first-ever Instagram Live video streamed from space.

The actor and comedian, who hosts the new documentary series "One Strange Rock," had an amusing 20-minute chat with NASA astronaut Drew Feustel, a flight engineer for Expedition 55. The series, which premiered March 26 on the National Geographic Channel, tells the story of life on Earth from the perspective of astronauts — the only people who have ever left it.

Feustel didn't offer many details on the subject of pooping in space (but if you really want to know, Space.com has the scoop on space poop here). "You hope for the good days, but the bad days can be challenging," Feustel said, and left it at that. He was more open to talking about his personal hygiene routine, which doesn't involve showering or bathing. Instead, the astronauts rub soaking-wet towels and soap all over their bodies every day. "It's hard to stay real clean up here," Feustel said.

Those wet towels are responsible for some of the aromas you can find in the space station, Feustel said. Food smells are also pretty common inside the orbiting lab, which currently houses six crewmembers. But space also has a smell outside of the station, Feustel said. Astronauts returning from spacewalks tend to reek of ozone, which smells like burnt wire, he said.

Smith asked Feustel whether he knew of any astronauts who had joined the "mile high club" in space (in other words, whether anyone has had sex in space). Smith asked, "Has anyone attempted for research purposes…the process of procreating the human species in space?"

While you’re here, how about this:

Watch Will Smith conduct first-ever Instagram interview with astronaut

Astronaut Drew Feustel, left, is aboard the International Space Station as actor Will Smith, right, holds the world's first Instagram Live streaming interview with a space traveler.

On Friday morning, the West Philly native held the first-ever Instagram Live streaming interview with an astronaut in space.

The event was sponsored by NatGeo, which produces Smith’s new “One Strange Rock” series about the mysteries of planet earth.

Taking Smith’s questions ‘ many of them submitted by fans ‘ was astronaut Drew Feustel, a flight engineer for Expedition 55 of the International Space Station.

As you might expect from a combination of Will Smith’s mind and crowdsourced questions, the conversation touched on topics from the bathroom to the bedroom. Feustel, whose mission includes helping researchers collect samples, did his best to handle them with grace and humor.

This meeting is a part of events surrounding the release of One Strange Rock, a new National Geographic documentary series executive produced by Darren Aronofsky and Jane Root’s Nutopia. Smith and Feustel, according to a press statement, will be talking about ‘space, music, and more,’ so here’s hoping we find out whether the ISS crew prefers ‘Miami’ or ‘Switch.’

But according to a 2015 tweet from astronaut Scott Kelly, the ISS has a slow internet connection that is ‘worse than what dial-up was like.’ Since then, however, NASA has been making some upgrades: In March, Feustel was part of a spacewalk mission to expand external WiFi on the ISS to support ongoing on-station experiments. There’s development on the horizon by NASA of ‘high-speed space internet,’ but that’s not ready yet, so it will be interesting to see how Smith’s Instagram Live connection holds up.

They’ll probably chat about the show, have some light banter about Independence Day, then get into the cool stuff that Feustel and his crew get up to. Right now on the ISS, there are six crew members from Russia, Japan, and the United States, and they’re nearing the end of their mission: Their joyride began in February 2018 and ends this month. They’ve been studying the effects of microgravity on bone marrow, the responses of Earth material to space environments, and the responses of biological samples to simulated gravity. One of their projects is devoted to studying sperm ‘ specifically, frozen human and bull sperm ‘ to find out how long-duration spaceflights will influence human reproduction.

Will Smith and Feustel talk about sperm? Who knows, but we hope so. If you want to see for yourself, watch National Geographic’s Instagram Live on Thursday from 11:45 a.m. to 12:05 p.m. Eastern.
