Donald Trump’s Strange Justice

The president regards due process as a form of political correctness’unless he or his allies are the ones targeted by law enforcement.

How President Trump feels about due process appears to depend on whether he or his associates are the ones being investigated.

Monday, after the news broke that federal investigators had raided the office, hotel room, and home of Trump’s longtime personal attorney Michael Cohen, the president called it ‘an attack on our country, in a true sense,’ and ‘an attack on what we all stand for.’

Such rhetoric also points to how Trump wishes the law would operate. For those outside Trump’s privileged circle, the law bars no cruelty, brutality, or injustice. For Trump and those he considers his allies, no scrupulous adherence to due process is sufficient, and no crime can justify prosecution.

For the gilded class orbiting Trump Tower, impunity. For communities of color and others targeted by his rhetoric, and the public figures who draw his wrath, only the harshest sanctions will do.

Quite a lot has been going on:

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Trump

Which president will the nation see tonight, today, five minutes from now? It’s still not a question we’re accustomed to asking. Or maybe the opposite is true: In his 14 months in office, President Donald Trump has toggled so frequently between reason and rant, between normalcy and lunacy, we’re no longer surprised by his emotional outbursts. We’re inured to the circus in his head.

Then comes a moment in which Trump battles his demons in public. We see his twin personalities ‘ his twin presidencies ‘ and recognize again the cost to the country of his erratic behavior. If only America could just have Good Trump, the one who got Congress to pass tax reform, and silence Bad Trump, the one attacking special counsel Robert Mueller.

We saw Trump’s Jekyll and Hyde routine unfold Monday night at the start of his White House meeting with military leaders and others to discuss a response to Syria’s use of chemical weapons. It was a serious moment that Trump disrupted with a paranoid tirade about the Mueller investigation. Reacting to news that the FBI on Monday raided the New York office of Michael Cohen, his attorney, Trump disparaged the investigation, undermined Attorney General Jeff Sessions and let hang in the air the possibility of firing Mueller ‘ which would ignite a constitutional crisis.

The gist, according to Trump: ‘Here we are talking about Syria, we’re talking about a lot of serious things with the greatest fighting force ever, and I have this witch hunt constantly going on for over 12 months now. ‘ And it’s a disgrace, it’s frankly a real disgrace. It’s an attack on our country in a true sense. It’s an attack on what we all stand for.’

What a damaging line of thinking for a president to espouse. The Mueller investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election is the opposite of an attack on America. It is American democracy in action, a system based on laws, checks and balances designed to counter the might of raw political power. The investigation is looking at possible collusion by the Trump campaign with Russia, and whether Trump may have obstructed justice by firing FBI Director James Comey to derail the probe.

How Donald Trump’s meeting with Kim Jong

It's strange to think that more than three years have passed since the Seth Rogen and James Franco comedy "The Interview" caused a real-life geopolitical conflict between the United States and North Korea. The underlying joke’in that movie was that American celebrity culture ‘ and the Kim dynasty's well-known obsession with it ‘ might lead to the downfall of that nation's tyrannical regime. Now we have a president whose previous job was as a pop-culture celebrity,’and he too is threatening to have a one-on-one meeting with North Korea's autocratic ruler.

The key difference, of course, is that this is the real world instead of a lowbrow comedy. That doesn't automatically mean that Trump's mission is doomed to failure; there’is something to be said‘for’theatricality and how it can lead to the shaping of wise statesmanship. Surely the desire for world peace should outweigh anyone's dislike of the president ‘ and so it's hard not to root for him to strike a deal for peace with North Korea.

The problem is that the very circumstances that Trump created, and that have opened up this opportunity with are also, in a cruel irony, the ones that will make it so immensely difficult for him to achieve that necessary artful deal.

"So I think that serves the purpose of keeping the North Koreans off balance," Fly continued. "Some of that unpredictability, I think, is useful in this context and may be why the North Koreans’seem now to’be seeking this off ramp from the escalatory cycle that they’were in previously and’seem’to be open to talks."

Even though Trump has opened the door to dialogue with North Korea, his own theatrical nature ‘ and, in particular, the bombastic promises he has made about forcing North Korea to bend to America's will ‘ have backed him into a corner.
